This is a great book for understanding the basics of cryptography. This book has a more mathematical approach. For each protocol, the book gives details about the know how (how the protocol works, how secure is it against certain types of attacks) and also the know why( why is it secure/insecure against certain attacks, time complexity, proof of security using number theory etc).
