Book Summary of The Monk as Man: The Unknown Life of Swami Vivekananda

Wandering mystic, India's spiritual ambassador to the West and founder of the Ramakrishna Mission, Swami Vivekananda awakened India's masses to the country's spiritual richness while stressing the importance of scientific inquiry. These aspects of Swamiji's life have been well chronicled by Swamiji himself, through his letters, speeches and writings; his own brothers who between them have written more than a hundred books; his co-disciples, disciples and others whose lives were enriched by their interactions with him; and, more than a century after his death, followers who had only read or heard of the magnetic personality of this revered teacher.

Gleaned from all these sources, through painstaking research Sankar's biography focuses on the personal life of the saint: What was Vivekananda like as a man? What role did his mother play in his life, both before and after he renounced all family ties? Could he reconcile the duties of a monk with the duties of an eldest son? What prompted him to promote Vedanta and biriyani in the West? Did the long drawn battles over family property affect his health and cut short his life? Did his sister commit suicide? Why did his brother not write a single letter for six years when he was wandering around the world? What was Swamiji's favourite dish and what fruit did he like the least? What was his height? Where did he have his second heart attack? How much did the Calcutta doctor charge him at his chamber?

Sankar's composite picture of the monk as man has sold over one lakh copies in Bengali and this translation brings the unfamiliar Vivekananda to a larger readership.

The monk who 'soul'd his people

Sankar's well researched and well written book chronicles the extra-ordinary life of Swami vivekananda, the monk who mesmerised the whole world with his wonderful oratory and wisdom and gave wings to the indian philosophy. lesser known aspects of vivekananda's life, like his obsession with chain smoking, his culinary interests and his tryst with malodies have been detailed in length in this biography.Sankar brings into light vivekananda's intense attachment with his mother. Author depends both on primary and secondary data to write this scholarly work of a life. A must read for all who are interested in the great vivekananda, the monk as well as the man.Thank you sankar!

Good book to know about Swami Vivekananda's life!

We in India have heard, read about Swami Vivekananda and his genius since childhood. Have you ever wondered about - how was he as a person, what hardships he had to face in his life, the food he loved, did he face any health issues? If this part of Swamiji's life interests you then you need to read Shankar's book - The Monk As Man. Apart from these facts, I also found reasons why Swami Vivekananda was accepted wholeheartedly by the people in US and Europe. Many of them became his admirers and some disciples.

Good Reading and information about the great man of India.

Many books have been return on and about life, times and thoughts of Swami Vivekananda. In that regards, this book shed different light of his life and journey from Noren to Swamiji. This book tell us many things about Swamiji's "common-man" avtar. He was at heart a family man and never ever posed himself as saint when it comes to his family. Book is very good read for those who are interested in knowing this great human. Written in simple language and in an easy to understand way. Recommended.
