Morphy Richards MR 40 RC SS OTG

Bought this oven 2 years back, before Flipkart started selling ovens. This is the biggest portable electric OTG available in the Indian Market for home bakers(as per my knowledge) and the best so far. Results are good, but one has to bake and make mistakes before getting to know the oven well. Cakes, roast chicken and Tandoori dishes turn out real well. For those who love baking, please buy this. For those who are starting out, buy the smaller capacity OTG's of the same brand. Would give the brand a 5 star rating, but not for Morphy Richards Customer Service.

It is actually not that bad. I have had this model for about a month now and I am reasonably impressed. I always wanted a portable oven since I am a bachelor and live in a rented place and did not see the point in buying a cooking range.

My first impression was about the lightness of the product. It appears to be constructed using mostly aluminium which is strong and light. The trays are made of steel and the grill along with the rotisserie components are made of stainless steel.

When I first got the oven home, before I could do anything with it, the glass door shattered while I was trying to open it. I called up flipkart immediately and they replaced the entire product in a week. I later found out that the culprit was a little rubber wheel connected to the part that helps keep the door half open. It was quite frustrating to have to wait for a week for the replacement but the pizzas, roasts and lasagnas and quiches I made in the past month more than made up for it.

It is a very simple machine. Straightforward. you can actually peer through the vents and see all the parts inside that are behind the dials.

I have used all the standard functions in this oven (bake, broil, toast, grill, convection) except the rotisserie function (however all the rotisserie mechanisms work perfectly fine). Everything works great. It heats up to 250C in about 15 minutes. There is a light that comes on when you turn on the machine and it goes off when the oven reaches the desired temperature.

The timer is reasonably good though it has gotten stuck while baking on a couple of occasions but resumes working when you touch it (so use a clock to keep time just in case this happens). Hardly bothers me plus it gives my oven character.

Cleanup is pretty easy although some of the stains from splattering food on the inside don't seem to come out even with mildly soapy water on a towel. I overlook that since it does not affect the performance of the machine.

Overall, great product. the price is slightly steep but flipkart's discount is greater than others in the market. Hugely cuts down my time in the kitchen since all I need to do is chuck a few ingredients in a pot, put it in the oven and have a great meal in an hour.

PROS : light, looks great in the kitchen, major time saver, all the parts do what they are supposed to do.

CONS : timer gets stuck sometimes (but this might just be a problem only for my oven).

Conclusion

It is by no means the best oven out there. It is not the worst either. I would recommend it because it has grown on me and I'm sure it will grow on you too.

After repeated request for interior dimensions, I got only "we do not have" reply from Flipkart and total silence from Morphy Richards. I totally agree with the Second reviewer, their customer support is pathetic. They have no respect for customer's requirement. Finally I could get the details in Croma store. The width of chamber is about 15". Unfortunately most baking pans I have are 17" in size. 17" is standard for most of the things including cast iron dutch ovens (that includes the handles). So this oven is big but useless. I do not have specs of their 52 litre model. I could not see it anywhere in shops. Flipkart... do you mind putting proper specs before listing?

I bought this oven in August 2012 after the claims that it was one of the best brands in UK. Unfortunately, I am still waiting to use it due to the extremely poor after sales service. The service staff at the Kolkata centre are very rude and never provide a time frame. They have kept me waiting for more than 2 months now for a replacement part found damaged on the new oven. No problems with flipkart though.
