Mother Pious : Lady Making Sense Of Everyday India (Paperback) Price: Rs.349

A new India is visibly emerging from within the folds of its many pasts. This new India needs to be seen with new eyes, free from the baggage of yesterdays characterizations. This is exactly what Santosh Desai, one of Indias best-known social commentators, does in this warm, affectionate and deliciously witty look at the changing urban Indian middle class.
Writing as an insider, from personal experience, Desai cuts through the chaos and confusion of everyday India both yesterday and today, and suddenly, makes us see things clearly. Holding a mirror to our inner selves, Desai makes us see what drives us, what makes us tick, what makes our hearts beat, and how our mindsets and attitudes are changing, even as the past never quite leaves us. And Desai does so in short masterful essays, written with great humour and sensitivity. A big book about small things that truly matter.

Subtly amusing and thought provoking

As the title suggests, the book is subtly amusing while being quite thought provoking. The humor is subtle and sarcastic at times.

It becomes plainly clear from the book that Santosh Desai is very well read, quite insightful and has a global view of things. He picks a bunch of Indian peculiarities and analyzes them but limits his analysis to digestible bite-sized chunks. The essays held my attention and by the time I reached the conclusions of individual essays, more often than not they made me stop for a moment and think of what Santosh had just described as the reason/background of why...

It becomes plainly clear from the book that Santosh Desai is very well read, quite insightful and has a global view of things. He picks a bunch of Indian peculiarities and analyzes them but limits his analysis to digestible bite-sized chunks. The essays held my attention and by the time I reached the conclusions of individual essays, more often than not they made me stop for a moment and think of what Santosh had just described as the reason/background of why we are this way. The conclusions reflected well thought out reasons, not some shallow sound bites.

I would neither describe this as an easy read nor a difficult one, but certainly an enjoyable and satisfying one.

Personally, I would like to read a second edition with other Indian peculiarities discussed.

Excellent read

This book immediately caught my attention as I was flipping through the pages reading the passages at a random manner. I must say-this book is well researched, not in a scholarly sense, but in a more nostalgic manner. This book is primarily about the biggest consumer in the country-the middle class. The author presents his observations in minute detail, be it the evolution of the Indian cinema, the tradition and joys of living in a joint family, the advent of the maruti car and its significance etc..he further observes how the generation is undergoing a change be it in aspirations, tastes,... But the best part is that u surf along all these topics in a lightly manner and the author ensures that you smile with agreement every now and then.
A must read for every Indian and those who want an honest and simple picture of the general masses.
Thanks for the amazing experience Santosh Desai :)

Nostalgic and Sensible

The book is divided into very small chapters, each is (kind of) an experience that an average Indian citizen would have undergone. The chapters about the Bajaj scooters and stainless steel utensils made me grin from ear to ear. While the chapters about the hill stations and vacations made me frown up on him for trivializing such an important experience in my life. But then again he shifted gears and had me in splits and nodding in smug appreciation when he trashes the concept of ‘arranged marriages’. The book in essence took me on a roller coaster in terms of my reactions to the ch... ()

Awesome!

This is easily my favourite non-fiction book. Desai's sense of humour is impeccable, the metaphors are all spot on and the writing, in general, has a nice flow to it. Besides, the spectrum of topics that he manages to cover in this 300-odd page book is incredible!

Indians will undoubtedly be able to relate to the articles and for foreigners who are fed up with the cliched descriptions of the country and want to get a peak of everyday India, there cannot be a better book!

This Book is Overrated

Average book. Though it deals with middle class India in the late 80's and 90's, another writer could have handled it much better. It becomes a little boring and monotonous after the first few chapters. Santosh Desai is well known figure in the marketing world but I wasn't impressed at all with his style of writing. He's taken too many pages to narrate a story that could have been better as an airport read.
