get the defy, leave the plus

I haven't bought this product, but i do own the defy (without the plus)

so what are the major differences between the defy and the defy plus ?

1. the defy plus certainly has a bigger battery and it is slightly heavier...1700 mAh beats 1540 mAh

the defy plus processor TI OAMP 3620
the defy processor TI OAMP 3610
both these processor are practically the same(check that on wiki)
3610 is an underclocked version of the same processor...
when defy was launched last year, motorola was probably hoping to avoid defy vs 'other high end moto phones' competition...
it was meant to be in a different price range, different segment....

no worries, the defy can be overclocked, quite safely
i am running mine at 1.5 gHz... way better than defy

3. the rom ram etc are exactly identical to defy (if you dont believe, check gsm arena and other phone database websites)

4. the operating system... some ppl might tell you to go for plus because it has 2.3 whereas defy has 2.2
well this is not a problem anymore, the defy can be rooted(if you don't know what that is , google it) and it can run custom ROMS/OSs i.e. different android versions....
(NOTE: Rooting voids you warranty, but no worry defy can be unrooted and the stock/default rom can be reinstalled, unlike htc samsung etc)
i am running cyanogen Mod 7 (CM7) it is a custom verion of android 2.3.7 gingerbread (better than the plus's 2.3.3)
whats even better, in a 2-3 months i will be running CM9 which is android 4.0 ice cream sandwich (android 3.x range is for tablets only)
but the minor problem is that plus is just released, so these custom rom developers have to buy it, and work on it, and by the time you guys get the next custom android version it will be nearly a year or more... which i assure you will be much earlier than motorola's official update release...

DEFY users : dont be afraid to go rooting,if you knew the power of a 1.5 ghz gingerbread defy, you'd not even think once...
way way faster than defy and the defy plus

5. apart from the above the above theres absolutely no difference between the two except the 4k price diff...(oh yeah ! i got my defy in bangalore for just 14k)

one imp warning to both defy and the PLUS users... your phone is not all that scratch proof.... sure it can handle everyday casual rough use... but don't try testing it or showing off... its not the same everytime...
i did show off initially, didnt have any problems there... but 1 day i accidentally dropped it in a rocky stream of fast flowing water... luckily not fast enough, my phone wasn't swept away, landed on some rocks... knee deep murky water, search took about half an hour.... the phone survived without any damage, but i did get a few scratches on the screen...
moral of the story: perfectly water proof, awesome shock resistance ( must have dropped it a million times apart from that once), scratch resistance way better than any other phones in any price range, but not perfect...

I say Go For the DEFY
If you're too scared to play/experiment with your phone , only then go defy plus...

my best decision on the last day of 2011

I got my defy plus on 31st dec 2011.what can i say about this is the best in the budget.I had 2 options
defy plus and xperia neo v before making my purchase.
I researched a lot on the internet and found out following
about defy plus:
1. great looks still being the most sturdy rugged's smallest in this segment just 107mm long handset yet having 3.7 inch screen with screen covering almost the full size of handset. Its size is much smaller than today's tablet sized phones
2. Great screen with great resolution ,16:9 aspect ratio..same as neo v..pixel density is enough..u won't demand for any more than this..individual pixels are almost hard to track.
3. Great music output both on fm and music has equalizer and other sound enhancing settings too but those settings you can find under settings>> quality is a lot better than my nokia xpress reception is also better than my nokia.
4. gorilla glass..
5. Great battery backup.1700mah battery is a beast in this segment.Easily runs for 1-2 day under heavy/average use and upto 3 days under light use.better than any other android i have came across..
6. Signal strength on both 3g and wifi is appreciable..wifi strength of defy is even bettr than that i get on my dell inspiron.voice quality over earpiece is enough loud..same is the case for the listener on the other side.
7. support from cynogenmod..CM9 based on ics will be available for defy..alpha version has already been released..
8.Camera is average.i heaven't used neo-v so can't tell much about that.but defy 's camera is ok..It captures images wid good details..i know it lacks 720p capturing ability but looking the bitrate of 720p videos i feel i would never like to use it.the vga videos taken from defy is okey for me.
9.No heating issues even on playing heavy games for hours.
10.In my 14 days of use i did't face any hanging prob / reboots / force shutdown
11. I have installed mx video player..defy plus plays all formats easily upto hd even managed to play a full hd video song(1080p)..I think the video playback support depends upon the bitrate of can easily play hd movies but failed to play some hd video songs(mp4 and wmv)..i think the cause may be the size to duration ratio..movies have 1-1.2 gb size for 1.5 hours duration whereas video songs have 200-250 mbs for 3-4 minutes duration
12. 1 ghz and 512mb ram is enough to drive this gadget..if still u want more it can be overclocked upto 1.5 ghz by rooting.i haven't tested. i am satisfied with 1 ghz won't have to run for a polybag for keeping you phone if trapped in rain
14.The last but most important thing that defy plus has is 2gb internal memory.. out of which 1.2 gb is available for the user..i know it may not sound that much important right now but i guess ice cream sandwitch would be of larger size than gingerbread..on neo v the ~250-320 MB of internal space may reduce to ~150 MB after installing android 4.0 which will certainly put neo v among the low end androids( i am not very much sure about this)

1. just one thing that it misses is front camera..but it's not much required..i had one on my last nokia symbian the last three years i don't remember if i used it even once for video talk/chat.
2. gingerbread 2.3.6 is available but motorola india has stopped upgrade direct over the air.u'll have to visit their service centre.

About neo v

1.Camera may be slightly better than defy
2.720p video capture.if you require it then it's great.but installing a custom rom on defy plus would bring this feature on it too.
3. secondary camera..may be a big reason for some of you.
4. bravia engine: it's nothing but some kind of software magic.making the bright colours more bright and the dull colours more dark..check gsmarena blog for more details.i preferred going for natural colours so i chose defy plus rather than getting attracted by such marketing gimmick.

1. weak signal at some friends who own a sony ericsson often have this complaint inside my office building office.i get 4 bars on my moto defy plus and they get no signal on idea's network i guess such problem might exist in neo- v too
2. wifi signal problem..courtesy -- reviews
3. shining plastic body wid no case available in indian market ..looks really great but can get lots of scratches.
4.Battery backup is good but not great as is in defy plus ..check tech2 reviews for defy
5.heating problems: i came around several such complaints by neo-v users.

now between defy and defy plus i chose plus because i preferred giving rs 2000 extra for:

1.bigger battery.
2.newer android 2.3.4/2.3.6: would you like to root your new shiny phone the next day of getting it in ur hand??
3.ti-omap 3620 processor has 2d/3d graphic hardware accelarator but 3610 doesn't has for texas instruments pdf docs.

Worth....peace of mind

I am of a opinion that when you buy a item of considerable amount, it should last for ever (even though practically impossible). Remember our parents used to buy television for around 17 k or 18 k and we used to use it for around 5-10 years!

So coming to Defy , I have peace of mind that I do not need to at all care when I am near a swimming pool clicking snaps..or in everyday life if my phone gets into the hands of my kid...infact my kid snatches it from my hand and keeps on playing angry birds...and I LEAST CARE how she handles the phone....(no need of hiding it when she's around)

Mentioning about the performance there's absolutely no issue. I found no lagging and no hanging issues...Gingerbread is great and great free apps on Android market... Camera is OK when it comes to picture quality...

And now about the cost...its seems people are comparing it to NEO...well internal memory is way much more in Defy ...and further with Neo, will you be in your senses if it falls in water or careless during Indian Monsoon?

Moreover, its all upto the person whether he/she is ready to shell out such an amount....well I did and I am not at all regretting...
If you are in a second thought, you might still wait a little for the price to come down.....
Take care...

Best buy at this price range !

hello friends !
I m writing this review from my defy...
so there are all mixed up reviews here regarding defy

well... there are actually alot of major differences between defy n defy
starting with :

PROCESSOR : both phones have the same core, that is Cortex a8 but defy has slightly overclocked at 1Ghz

CHIPSET : defy has TI OMAP 3620 whereas defy has its predecessor 3610.

ROM & INTERNAL MEMORY : defy has a separate 1 GB rom and 2GB intetnal memory whereas defy has 2GB total memory both rom and internal included.

ANDROID : defy plus has stock 2.3 (gingerbread) whereas defy has stock 2.2 (froyo).

BATTERY : defy plus has 1700 mAh whereas defy has 1540 mAh.

so conclude, Defy assures nearly 25% overall performance boost with better battery & memory management with new Android 2.3 also better image processing & graphics rendering with faster processor !

Defy should not be 4K more than Defy . The 1 Ghz processor is just an overclock on the same CPU (only the battery is improved)

Many reviewers on YouTube have conveyed the 1 Ghz processor doesn't feel as quick as it should and the Camera being not even an average quality like the original. Apparently even the materials used have been compromised. We definitely needed a rugged phone with higher specs and the old Defy should have been continued as a low end version. An OMAP 4 CPU with a slimmer body would have won me over. Instead they have gone with an OMAP3620, which is not worth an extra 4K.
