A Classic Guide

This book is a claasic guide to the city of MUMBAI. It tells the reader of the history of the great city and how it came into being. How was the plaaning of the city was carried out by the britishers and then the indian planners. It also tells us about the turbulent histoic episodes which the city had to face but surprisingly the author has left an important aspect of the city CRICKET and its MAIDANS. the city is supposed to be the birth place of indian cricket. but over all a good informative read.

Scholarly and beautifully written

This is an amazing book. With a lot of research, it recounts Mumbai's history with beautiful prose. At times, it reads like a thriller. You get an account of different stories told over time about Mumbai and what lies behind them. It covers the city's history from the time of the Portuguese conquest, through British Raj, and up to the present. Occasionally it is tough going, but stick with it! Never before has anyone written about Mumbai with this kind of learning and with a nice, narrative style. Highly recommended.
