Book: Music Room
When Namita is ten, her mother takes her to Kennedy Bridge, a seamy in Mumbai. There, in a cramped one room flat, lives Dhondutai. Despite her squalid surroundings, Dhondutai is special. For she is the only remaining student of the finest singers of the Jaipur gharana: the legendary Alladiya Khan and renowned songbird, Kesarbai Kerkar. Dhondutai is the keeper of the gharanas secrets and of their rarest compositions. And yet for all her devotion to music, Dhondutai herself has never achieved fame. Namita begins to learn singing from Dhondutai, at first reluctantly and then with growing passion. Dhondutai sees in her a second Kesar, but does Namita have the dedication? Or will there always be too many late nights and cigarettes? The Music Room is the story of Namita and her teacher; of the charismatic Alladiya Khan; and of the foul-mouthed and bewitching Kesarbai. At its heart is Dhondutai, shy, diffident yet full of determination. Beautifully written, full of anecdotes, gossip and legend, it is a stunning book.

This is book is a treat for everyone who is passionate about Indian Classical Music. It takes you through the musical journey of three musicians and also contains little stories of other musicians here and there which gives one an insight about the life of classical musicians. Stories like that of Sant Haridas- Guru of Miyan Tansen are really interesting.

This book tells you about the challenges in life of classical musicians of both past and present. One also comes across the two sides of the life of lady performers. Appreciation and euphoria when on stage and social stigma when off it..

I agree with the quote on the cover of the book by Pt. Ravi Shankar "Fantastic ! This book is a must for every musician and music lover!"

I strongly recommend this book to anybody who has roots in indian classical music, be it the carnatic or the hindustani style of singing. To those who have learnt music, the first few chapters bring back old memories of the first few years of learning. It essays the lives of three musicians: Alladiya Khan, Kesarbai and Dhondutai; all three very different in their lifestyles and outlook, the umbilical cord being their exceptional musical talent. The book provides the reader insight into the history of classical music, it traces its development from the times that it was patronized by kings.
Very aesthetically written, this book is definitely a must read for those interested in classical music.

I too, strongly recommend this book. Its simple without any snobbishness or any embellishments; from the first page you get entraped in the life of the narrator. Its authenticity regarding the facts about Indian Classical Music and what it means to those who truely pursue this austere art is incredibly conspicuous throughout the text.

The book tells you the different phases that a musician goes through. The meaning of public appreciation and what a simple gesture as - listening carefully and mere clapping - can do to upbeat the moral of any artist.

it was an enlightening and a spiritual experience for me.
