The history of Indian Writing in English in broadly speaking a development from poetry to prose and from romantic through the phases of Imitation, Assimilation to authentic artistics utterance and Experimentation. The experimental approach, the quest for originality, stress on individuality and rejection of all that is traditional has borne impressive results. The poets have been lifted from exclusive to an extensive range of creative experieence, raised from conservative to a cosmopolitan culture to confront the new shape of things and acquire a new vision of human destiny.

Educated at the Benars Hindu University Dr. N. Sharda Iyer is the Vice-Principal and Head of the Department of English at Vasanta College for Women, Krishnamurti Foundation India, Rajghat, Varansi. Her area of interest includes Indian English Literature, British, American and Indian English Literature, Apart from the present volume on Poetry, Which is a sequal to Musings on Indian Writing in English, Vol.I (Fiction) her frothcoming books are (1) Doris Lessing: A Study in Themes, (2) Moral Vision of William Golding (3) V.S. Naipual: A Study (4) Musings on Indian Writing in English Vo. III (Drama). Many of her research papers have been published in books, journals, magazines and articles in newspapers.
