Summary of the Book
Set in the 1790s in India, this story begins against the backdrop of the third Anglo-Mysore War between the Kingdom of Mysore and the East India Company. The British are racing towards another pinnacle. After having seized the Malabar Coast, they are lurching anxiously towards Bangalore, and Tipu Sultan is fighting a fierce battle. In this time of conspiracies and wars, the beautiful Uma Brooke, an Englishman’s daughter in the guard of a Mysore Maharaja, is caught in an inner conflict of her own. The Maharaja wants her to marry Captain Ashton Trevelyan of the British army. But Uma does not want to disappoint her kind guardian yet. She is disturbed by the circumstances of her birth and is vocal about her love for India, and hence, she cannot think of a future with Ashton.
