My Kumaon: Uncollected Writings 1st Edition (Paperback) Price: Rs.169

Hunter, naturalist, and conservationist, Jim Corbett is famous for slaying man-eating tigers and leopards in the Kumaon region of northern India. Frequently appealed to by the government of the United Provinces during the 1920s and the 1930s for help, Corbett is known to have shot nineteen tigers and fourteen leopards - all man-eaters. Corbett was encouraged to write about his hunting experiences by Roy E. Hawkins, manager of the Indian Branch of the Oxford University Press and a personal friend.

An integral part of OUP India's centenary celebrations, this volume includes Jim Corbett's unpublished writings on man-eaters, nature, and his beloved Kumaon, personal letters, articles written for newspapers and gazettes by his contemporaries, and letters exchanged between Corbett and his publisher showcasing the development of his bestselling books - all from the archives of the Oxford University Press. It highlights Corbett's engagement with the times in which he lived, his complete empathy with the people of Kumaon, his great understanding of tigers and leopards, and also the gradual development of his ideas about conservation and the need to preserve the tiger and its habitat.

Chronicling the history of his bestselling books (Man-Eaters of Kumaon, The Man-Eating Leopard of Rudraprayag, and My India) and supported by rare photographs and evocative line drawings, this volume reflects the evolution of his writing as well as his long relationship with the Press.

Excellent Read

Bought this in a book store in Ladakh, read it on my flight back to Bangalore. It's really hard to put down. But what this has is a lot of lead-up writings while the main incidents of a lot of hunts are in other books. This is more like a trailer and builds up all the insanity for you to learn that the grand climax of each story is somewhere else!

Plus it has a lot of Corbett's letters to his sister, publisher and others' letters to Corbett with reviews of his other work. If you are looking to understand Jim Corbett, this is a good read. But if you are looking for edge-of-the-seat thriller stories, then you might be slightly disappointed because of the point mentioned above.

Still, it is an excellent read and is really quite tough to put down once you start reading!

My Corbett!

This book is a little glimpse into the life of Jim Corbett. Observant readers will love the little stories within the stories.. for example, Mr. Corbett becoming impatient with Mr. Ibbotson, only to later realise the fault was not Mr. Ibbotson's and admitting as much. The human side of the legend is revealed through the writings.

To properly appreciate the collection, an introduction to Corbett Sahab is beneficial, though not essential. I would recommend readers familiarise themselves with Man-eaters of Kumaon and The Man-Eating Leopard of Rudraprayag along with this little epistolary book.

A very nice introduction to the man - Jim Corbett

A beautiful book that gives insight to the man Jim Corbett was. His love for the people of Kumaon and the place itself shines through. This is my first Jim Corbett book and inspires me to read all his books. Will worth the buy

When Jim Corbett was encouraged to write about his hunting experiences by Roy E. Hawkins

A good insight into Jim Corbett. This book mentions lots of Corbett's unpublished articles and also his correspondence with various people. The letters truly indicate how good his memory was of various events.

Although a lot of pieces in the book would appear unfamiliar to the reader who has not read JC's books.
