Myth = Mithya: A Handbook of Hindu Mythology 1st Edition (Paperback) Price: Rs.160

Devdutt Pattanaik is a leading expert and writer on India’s ancient scriptures and traditions, and this book of his explores the intriguing and often paradoxical world of Indian Mythology.

Through the course of their descent down countless generations, mythological stories are often treated as works of fantasy, and in order to break this down and provide some clarity on what’s fact and what’s fiction, Pattanaik delves into the smaller details and explains them with succinct ease.

In the book, Pattanaik attempts to explain common Hindu symbols and traditions, and he also explores the meanings behind rituals that are followed by Hindus. The book includes interesting snippets about Indian culture, the potential of the human soul to reach perfection, and the concepts of life and death.

Why do Hindus believe in one Supreme God, but have 330 million Gods overall?

Is there a place beyond hell that Hinduism talks about?

Why were the righteous Pandavas banished to hell, while the Kauravas were sent to heaven?

The book includes illustrations sketched by the author as these give him the freedom to explain the finer aspects of Hinduism easily.

Mythology = Tautology= Junk book

This book is not mythology but full of tautology! Author a self proclaimed mythologist is just playing with empty words which does not mean anything much, but appears to make profound meaning. Most of the stories presented are hear say are neither properly categorized or classified . The interpretations are inconsistent and inaccurate and even childish. Even the diagrams, and flow chart appear vacuous just for the effect of appearing scholarly. Bibliography appears impressive at the end of the book, but it appears author has hardly read any of these else they would have reflected in his writing.
This book is certianly not a handbook of Hindu mythology by any imagination. Like any junk food which tastes good but contains no nutrition this book an be classified as junk book of mythology.

Underprepared

I found the book very under prepared. It is filled with tables and diagrams, an attempt to simplify the symbols but which makes it a textbook. The stories and instances from Hindu Mythology are also scanty in detail and leave you disappointed.

Beautifully written!

Hindu Mythology in itself is such huge that its not a joke to fit in all its important aspects in one single text. The author's attempt to do this is worth of an appreciation. I enjoyed reading the logic and reasoning given in this book and the simplifications in form of diagrams. I find the text interesting and a must read by everyone for that matter... The book has made 'Mythology' much more of an interest for me than it was before!
