Myth = Mithya: A Handbook of Hindu Mythology (English) (Paperback) Price: Rs. 284

Myth = Mithya: A Handbook Of Hindu Mythology is a guide to unravel and understand the many myths and legends and the symbolism of the Hindu religion.

Summary Of The Book

Hinduism can be a puzzle or even an enigma to the uninitiated. There are so many different beliefs, so many rituals and so many myths and legends, it can be hard to follow. Myth = Mithya: A Handbook Of Hindu Mythology is an attempt by the author to shed light on this seeming tangle, to show the deeper meanings of the different stories. He explains about the Hindu Trinity and their Divine Consorts. He also goes into the puzzle of why Hindus believe in one Supreme Reality and yet claim the existence of 330 million Gods.

The book explains concepts like the Pitr, Jiva, and about the Devas and the Asuras. He explains the significance of various rituals. He discusses how the warrior-like Kali and the benign Gauri are different forms of the same Goddess. He also compares the roles and the powers of the Trinity, Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. He goes into the idea behind the various avatars or incarnations of the Preserver, Vishnu. He examines why the Rama and Krishna avatars have assumed such significance.

Myth = Mithya: A Handbook Of Hindu Mythology also compares the two major epics, The Ramayana and The Mahabharata. It analyzes why the two avatars in the epics, Rama and Krishna, were so different. It shows that the age that these epics were set in demanded different perspectives to handle similar situations. This book is not a continuous narrative, it does not read like a novel. Instead, it is a source of reference for those who want to gain a deeper understanding of the stories and rituals and symbols that permeate the Hindu faith. The book is not aimed just at those who are non-Hindus. Even those who have been brought up in the Hindu faith can gain some deeper insights into their customs and beliefs through this book. Myth = Mithya: A Handbook Of Hindu Mythology also includes illustrations which are drawn by the author.

Excellent book to read

Recently I've purchase this book and now it became a trouble for me. As my mother is unable to read or understand English, so every day I've to read and explain two or three stories every day in Hindi. Somewhere she found something to comment as some stories she had already heard in her childhood but many are very new for her.

Somewhere, it is seen that author is rising several unexplained questions instead explaining the things, but it is manageable because non of us were there when that thing was happening. Further, people around the different parts of the India or World have different view

Brilliant for the Amateurs!!!

This was the first mythology book I ever bought reading the reviews in Flipkart. And believe me, it won't disappoint you, if you are not much into mythology. The strength of the book is it's presentation-lucid and attractive, with pictures and tables for comparisons. You will surely find yourself enriched with knowledge by the time you finish. Eager to read the rest of his books. It will be a good read(and a gift) for both children and adults.

A very informative read

First when I started reading this book, I assumed that this would be filled with heavy mythological facts that will make me snore. But once I started reading further and further, turned out that I really enjoyed reading it.

The best part about this book is that it unravels the reason behind every belief that we have been following blindly till date. Gives a clear picture about mythological stories with proper validations. The language used is very simple, crisp and to the point.

A must read for people who are interested in mythology!!! :)

Fascinating and entertaining

Mythologies are not lies. The facts have been exaggerated with a purpose to keep them alive forever. It is a way to pass on the messages and teachings from one generation to another which continued for several generations from mouth-to-ear in absence of any written medium of communication. The author corroborates this very fact by telling and explaining various mythological stories. In the process, we get to know about various philosophical terms and their meanings. For instance, the difference between purusha and prakriti or difference between Kali and Gauri, Shiva and Vishnu ... and so on. i

Indeed a true Handbook

To begin with I must say that Hindu mythology is not history. Like the mythology of any other culture, Hindu mythology is also a collection of stories at times completely contradictory and at times utterly confusing. Mythology can never be a chronological record of data. Further, there is a very thin line dividing mythology from philosophy. We should not mistake this book for a historical record or philosophical treatise. Unfortunately some people expect mythology to be history and then fail to see the book in its true colour. The book is not pedantic but explanatory and tries to build a commo

You will not see Hindus the same way after you read this.

If you have not enough knowledge about Hindu mythology (Gods, Goddesses and Athman) then this book is for you. Its great, in fact its awesome. The facts shown here and the small paraphrases are minimalistic and upto the point so that it can make you understand the basics of hindu Gods and Goddessess.
The book is primarily divided into 3 parts:
(it also deals about the infinite - SAT CHIT ADANDA
The book itself is very enchanting, written in such a way that even the most anti-religious of people will give a second thought about his/her own rel

full of facts

I am generally on a lookout for mythology books. At least this one sounds interesting. And the facts were presented quite unbiasedly. Even if there are more scholarly writers on hindu mythology and interpret it, no one writes it in objective manner and leave spiritual meaning to the reader. all other authors rty to influence reader's mind by passing judgement that "wow hinduism is great". For not doing this "influencing" thing, i commend Pattnaik. However, observation of other readers that this book is under-prepared is also true. But I enjoyed reading it that way also. At least the facts mesm

an engaging book

The author's deep interest, passion and knowledge about Hindu Mythology truly reflects in this little book. Compact in size and handy, it is an ideal Travel read. One does not need to follow the chronological order to enjoy it. Any page opened, it catches the eyes and the reader can find himself herself engrossed in the particular story. This book reminds one of his/her childhood days when granny used to narrate the Rakshas Devas stories. I recommend it sincerely for a light and informative read for people in all age brackets.
