The Namesake (English) Reprint Edition (Paperback) Price: Rs.450

The Namesake is a contemporary novel about immigration and a family's lifelong search for melding into the new world by Jhumpa Lahiri.

Summary of the Book

Ashoke and Ashima Ganguli leave Calcutta for Cambridge, Massachussets. The novel begins with Ashima's delivery, and the birth of their first son. Ashoke is a student at MIT, and Ashima struggles with the language and culture of this new world. They are forced to give their child a legal name immediately after birth, and by accident, the child's pet name they decided upon, Gogol, becomes his legal name. Throughout his life Gogol hates his name, and he before leaving for college, he renames himself Nikhil Gogol Ganguli. Gogol enrolls at Yale, despite his father's wishes that he too study at MIT like him. His continuous hatred for his name and the distance he begins to develop both geographically and culturally with his parents form the rest of this novel.

A very well written book. She sets an example for all writers to follow. An amazing flow of story, superb description of characters and in-depth emotions so well expressed. Jhumpa makes all Indians proud. Loved the book.

boring.

very boring one. instead of the story, the narrator is narrating the story & the surrounding via his/her learned english/adjective. not at all recomended to buy. still it's kept in my cupboard.

Classic Read..!!!

Jhumpa Lahiri is one of the best writers of recent times. She actually has that capability of expressing and narrating scenes, characters very beautifully and deeply, rarely observed these days among writers.

'The Namesake' is one masterpiece. It has dealt with every character's perception of living very impressively. Why it matters to parents for children to keep up with their native culture and why children born and brought up on foreign land retaliate to it.

Set aside the story-line, every other chapter is a story with an impactful conclusion of its own.
