Nani Palkhivala The Courtroom Genius 1st Edition (Paperback) Price: Rs.536

Nani Palkhivala The Courtroom Genius is a book written about the great practices and the life of famous Indian jurist, Nani A. Palkhivala

Summary Of The Book

Nanabhoy A. Palkhivala was a prominent Indian jurist and economist. He grew up in Bombay, and his initial interest was in the commercial and income tax laws. He was thirty years old when he authored one of the finest works in Economics, The Law and Practice of Income Tax.

He rapidly grew important in courts and ten years after his entry to the bar, he argued in the Supreme Court of India. He was a phenomenon in court. Students and staunch followers flocked courts during his sessions. He had an unbeatable memory and strong persuasive power. He was known for remembering finer details which were barely known facts.

The book chronicles the journey of Nani Palkhivala as a lawyer and contains greatly known incidents of his arguments in court. His cases at the Supreme Court include the Mandal Commission, Bank Nationalisation, the Election Commission, Privy Purses, and Golak Nath among others. He also represented India in three international disputes.

He was a formidable wall for his opponents, and his style of argument was one of a kind. He was known to have initially rejected a seat in the Supreme Court, and after a great deal of persuasion, he accepted the post of Attorney General. His lectures on annual budgets always had a huge audience.

His final days were the most painful for his followers, as he was taken critically ill by Alzheimer’s disease. He could not remember details as effectively as he used to during cases in court. After a prolonged illness and mental degeneration, he breathed his last in December 2002, at the age of 82.

MASTER PIECE!

I am not studying law (though I intend to in the future)..but I am always keen and enthusiastic about reading such books and I saw this book on Flipkart and decided to give it a try.. I have read the book completely and I am speechless! Overhelmed by the content and the descriptive narration of our highly controversial post-independence legal, judicial and constitutional changes.. Nani Palkhivala's qualities are till date unmatched and are most unlikely to be even equalised in the future! He is one man which every aspiring lawyer dreams to become..! The work and the extensive reasearch of the authors as well as the efforts of all those contribution has made this book possible clearly oozes out of every page-every para.! There are indeed more than 100 people - not ordinary, but people who are/were at the apex of their profession - be it law, chartered accountancy or advocacy.. such more than 100 people who have sacrificed n given up their work and full fledgedly worked hard for the making of this book is surely commendable and this work cannot be forgotten by anyone who reads this book..! I would like to sum up by saying that this book is surely going to capture the reader's interest and attention once he starts reading the book.. "Who knew that our basic constitutional structure is a result of high drama and innumerable court cases and all that unfolds in full depth in this book"..! -Kaivalya Shimpi, (Chartered Accountancy + Company Secretaryship Student)

Extraordinary Legend

A must read for a Law students and aspiring litigators.

The book takes you through the journey of a legal luminary who in true sense defended the democracy and spirit of Constitution.

Though its 450+ pages, but its a mesmerising tale of Palkhivala's odyssey through Bombay High Court to Supreme Court of India and finally to International Court of Justice.

The authors have used simple language and tried to accommodate the readers with minute legal understanding. Landmark cases are discussed in detail which no Law student would find in any textbook. And readers like me; born post-emergency, would get the feel of what was the situation like during emergency era and how a single man during that time made a huge difference between a democracy and totalitarian regime.

Impressed

The book is illustrative of the inspiring and illustrious career of arguably world's one of the top ten lawyers ever.
A must for every law student or an enthusiast one.
The book has prominent cases in appendix, chiefly Golak Nath case, Kesavananda Bharti Case.

The fact that the book is co-authored by Soli Sorabjee makes it a good combine of intellectual insight too.

A must read for anyone interested in the constitutional history of India

Fascinated by Palkhivala's invaluable contributions of Palkhivala in the evolution of the working of Indian Constution. The case histories of the company law and tax cases could have been better included as a separate book. An invaluable read.
