Naoko (English, Japanese) (Paperback) Price: Rs.724

Winner of the Japan Mystery Writers Award, Naoko is a black comedy of hidden minds and lives. Navigating the interstices between the real and the unreal with perfect plot twists, this page-turner is also a critique of gender relations by a male Japanese writer, one of their best-sellng.

An everyman, Heisuke works hard at a factory job to provide for his wife, Naoko, and young daughter, Monami. He takes pleasure from the small things, like breakfast with both of them after a night shift. His placid life is rocked when, looking up from his microwave dinner one evening, he realizes the TV news that he wasn't paying attention to is reporting a catastrophic bus accident and the names of his loved ones.

When Monami finally wakes from a coma, she seems to think she's Naoko, who has died protecting her daughter. More disturbingly, the girl knows things only Naoko could know. The family life that resumes between the modest man and a companion who looks like his daughter bu seems like his dead wife is ticklish-funny until it begins hurtling toward a soul-shattering end.

In addition to winning Japan's top mystery prize, Naoko inspired a blockbuster movie. Read this work, a match for the later Bunuel, to find out why Higashino is considered the most ambitious and versatile mystery hand at work in Japan.

Naoko - Product and Content review

Firstly, living in the Northeast of India, Flipkart has been the one constant supply source for books. Delivery was rather timely. The book quality is very good. The pages are not paper thin but slightly thicker than usual, the print is clear and even when reading, the binding is solid and does not show signs of coming apart.

The book itself was surprisingly easy to go through. Clear and succinct. The plot can be very disturbing but makes you cry out (as I did) at the end. Like so many other reviews have written, this book does examine gender roles and also the improbable 'second chance...

The book itself was surprisingly easy to go through. Clear and succinct. The plot can be very disturbing but makes you cry out (as I did) at the end. Like so many other reviews have written, this book does examine gender roles and also the improbable 'second chance' at life that is presented to the title character, Naoko, a formerly content and devoted mother and housewife and what her choices entail for her husband, Heisuke, and for their daughter, Monami, whose body Naoko inhabits after an accident.

It is the type of book that can leave you in a bit of a daze as all books do, but that kind of daze that is hard to shake and continues to play on your mind. If you like that sensation then this book is the book for you.

But if you prefer his more well-crafted detective mysteries then books such as The Devotion of Suspect X and Salvation of a Saint will be better for you.

An Absorbing and Emotional Read

Ever since I read Higashino's "The Devotion of Suspect X", I have looked for all his books that have been translated into English. Naoko is not like the other two, which are essentially crime novels. I am not sure which genre to slot this into. I have seen it being referred to in different places as a mystery, a black comedy, a supernatural story ...and, I guess it is a bit of everything. There are multiple layers in the narrative though, at the core, I saw it as a story about dealing and coming to terms with loss. A very absorbing and emotional read.
