  • Description

Narcopolis is a novel by Jeet Thayil which is set in the Old Bombay of 1970s.

    Summary of the Book

The story begins in the 1970s, in Shuklaji Street, Old Bombay. Here, in the opium room of a man known as Rashid, the air is heavy with intoxicating fumes. A voluptuous young woman holds a stemmed pipe over a flame, offering it to the men sprawled around her. The seduction of opium beckons even the most stalwart of men. In this world, stray dogs hunt in packs and street vendors hustle. Prostitutes call out to their quarry as their pimps wait outside their caged rooms, eager to collect their due. This dark and pitiful world is threatened by the news of a new terror, a stone killer known as Pathar Maar. This killer is after the nameless and invisible poor, an infinitely large tribe in this dark and shattered city. In a broad sweep, this novel covers the lives of people living in the Bombay of the 1970s. It is peopled by colourful yet dark characters such as whores, pushers, poets, gangsters and eunuchs, and is an odyssey into a large underworld of unimaginable depth.

    Horrible

If you are thinking to buy this book and read it with a cup of coffee or to relax please don't buy. i wonder what made this book a nominee for booker prize. am no linguistic expert but as a person fond of reading this one is a dampener. so much so that i don't feel like picking up another book after reading this one!1 it's like some sour food leaves a bad taste in ur mouth.

Indian Authors-Stop Tarnishing India's Image For Your Own Gain

Yes..this book makes me introspect and evokes questions the little writer in me
it makes me question my own judgment
a book that was LONGLISTED for the prestigious MAN BOOKER PRIZE fails to appeal to me
it is replete with profanities and the filth of old Bombay
there is a tad too much of squalor in the book...Indian authors are now making use of the same formula to launch their potboilers. They write about the sordid streets in India and life of the poor with immense fervor and clarity. they...

    Prose or Poetry?

Jeet Thayil has churned out a beautiful book. It is so magical and lyrical that one can hardly believe that they are reading prose. No wonder it was shortlisted for Booker Prize.

Also, the hard back is a delight to look at.

    the narcopolis

was hoping it wouldn't be a shantaram 2.0, and NO it isn't.
    extremely well written.
people have compared his style to salman rushdie, mostly is true. you can see a lot of similarity in their narration. (of course Mr.Rushdie can't be compared to a newbie)
it isn't a must read. but is worth every penny.
    i give it a generous 4/5.

I would be interested in exchange

I went through various reviews .. and particularly liked the one where it says.. pl dont picture bad India ... dont use slumdog millionaire style .. it is also a good point of view. On the other hand.. in art ..dark side brings various things out and liked by us.. guns are always loved in movies.. I guess this novel is a fiction and not a documentary on Mumbai .. so it should interesting with new facts ..may be on darker side..

    Spellbinding

Narcopolis is a hard hitting, realistic book that shines a light on the drug sub-culture in Bombay over the past 4 decades. The story revolves a motley cast and traces their lives against the backdrop of a fast changing city. Thayil's biggest success is that he neither glamorizes nor vilifies any of the protagonists, instead describing their weaknesses and foibles without any judgement or pity. Ultimately, this is a book about Bombay - perhaps the biggest drug of them all. A good read for tho...

    AFEEN AND HER ACOLYTES

This is not the book for the wishy washy airy fairy cup-o-chai bourgeoisie reader of Indian writing in English. This is for the connoisseur, one who knows the pipe and the tales of the smoke and mirrors of life. The journey into this Parnassus of quickened, heightened, multiplied consciousness in Narcopolis begins and ends in Bombay, with an exciting interlude in China and a mention of New York. It is a journey on the slow train of transgressions, living vicariously the vicissitudes of its in...
