New Literatures In English : Tradition And Modernity In The Poetry And Novel Of Canada Australia And New Zealand

The recent past has seen a phenomenal growth of New Literatures in English. This study is an effort at understanding this literary phenomenon and underlining the frontiers of creative condition. It focusses on the poetry and novel of Canada,Australia, and New Zealand in a historical cum-critical perspective and defines their essential identitiers . In this first study of its kind adequate emphasis has been laid on the making of tradition, expression of modernism, post-colonial concerns, and the emergence of literary canon. New Literatures in English : Tradition and Modernity in the Poetry and Novel of Canada,Australia and New Zealand initiaties the curious reader into the other zone of the "settler colonies" and discusses issues broadly related to univesality and difference, nationalism and indigeneity, language and history,and place and displacement. Considering the literatures of new spatial contexts through yet another frames of time is a critical engagement of the other kind and the book prepares the reader to recognise these conditions of time and space. It presents essentially a major case and helps in appraising a new literary culture acquiring its roots fast in our country.

Anisur Rahman is a Professor in the Department of English,Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi. Apart from several publications in journals,he has three books to his credit: Form and Value in the Poetry of Nissim Ezekiel (Abhinav Publications, 1981 ), Expressive Form in the Poetry of Kamala Das (Abhinav Publications,1981) and fire and the Rose : An Anthology of Modern Urdu Poetry (Rupa & Co; 1995). New Literatures in English : Tradition and Modernity in the Poetry and Novel of Canada,Australia, and New Zealand is the result of his major research project which he conducted for the University Grants Commission, New Delhi. Prof. Rahman also writes in Urdu and translates from Urdu to English and vice-versa. Khwab Naghma, his anthology of modern English poetry in Urdu ;translation, is due for publications.
