Nine: Curse Of The Kalingan (Book - 1) by Shobha Nihalani is a thrilling piece of fiction which shows three people of the modern world engaged in a dangerous battle against an immensely powerful spirit which has risen from the ruins of the Kalinga war.

    Summary Of The Book

Nine: Curse Of The Kalingan (Book - 1) is a modern tale which has been brought out by the author from the depths of ancient history. The Kalinga war, fought by Emperor Ashoka, took place in 261 B.C. The war brought enormous destruction, death, and devastation. This was the war which brought about a profound change in the most famous Mauryan Emperor. The war shattered the Emperor, who then converted to Buddhism and pledged never to wage a war again.

The society of the ‘Nine’, founded by Ashoka, protected their knowledge and power fiercely, and kept this wealth of wisdom a closely guarded secret. This secret could prove to be very dangerous for mankind if it were to be placed in the wrong hands. In order to ensure peace, these secrets were handed down the generations. It is believed that these secrets still exist, and their keepers and protectors live normal lives as preachers, teachers, and scientists.

Unfortunately, Ashoka’s desire to keep the peace of the land is about to be shattered. The war of Kalinga also gave rise to an angry spirit, the spirit of one killed brutally in the war. This spirit is bent on avenging the Kalinga Empire. His intention is to rule the world and to change its destiny, and for this he needs the hidden knowledge, the power of the Nine.

The story then unfolds in the present with the spirit possessing a young man, Jeremy, in order to complete this task. This possessed man then sets out to kill each of the Nine. Three of the nine are dead, and the rest of the members disappear. Only three people can now stop this dangerous spirit, Tara, the chosen Trinity nurse, Akash, a DJ, and Zubin, a forensic expert. These are the three who are chosen to protect and carry forward the secrets of the Nine.

As they reside in different parts of the world, they decide to travel to Tibet. There, they meet a Dutch woman, Lise, who knows the secret locations of the nine ancient texts that have to be brought to the hidden kingdom in Tibet. In Tibet, a monk enlightens them about their powers and how they can use them to defeat the Kalingan spirit. Then unfolds their dangerous and thrilling journey, their fight against this deadly spirit to protect the secrets of the Nine and to save the world from destruction.

Kept me hooked till the end

I don't remember the last time I read a book that to ally blew me off! Hats off to the writer's imagination and creativity to have dug up a co-existing world right underneath our noses and to have served it in just the perfect manner to us, the readers!
This book titled 'Nine' is a pretty enigmatic tale of a hidden society formed by the ancient Indian king, Ashoka, the great that since then has been thriving right in the middle of civilization, going out of its way in helping humanity to surv...

    Impressive journey of novices

Surprising to see Penguin publishing a fantasy title under their MR imprint, but NINE: Curse of the Kalingan was a fresh change from the usual kind of books they release every month almost. I had stopped reading Penguin MR books but I saw this and read the synopsis and was soon totally captured by the journey of three people, Akash, Tara and Zubin, members of a secret club called NINE initialised thousands of years back by emperor Asoka. I didn't like the character of Vayu, the evil guy who w...

This book deserves a five star rating

I was delaying reading this book for quite some time now, making it seem like one of the books that I bought just for the cover. Turns out my judgement by the cover went kaput. Nine: Curse of the Kalingan is a gripping spiritual cum mythological fantasy ride that will never lose the grip on the reader. Researched in depth, solid characterization and wide plot that works better for books in series. My favourite character out of all was Vayu, even though he plays the negative part. Hope the wri...

    Absorbing and well-researched

A pretty interesting and different subject picked up by a female writer. No words about the writing, it is picture perfect but I so wished the story could continue from where it ended. I didn't want it to finish yet as I was so absorbed in the lives of the three people- Tara, Zubin and Akash, the trinity of the NINE. It's a book with some great facts mixed with fiction. Some awesome amount of research seems to have gone into this. Something like Ashwin Sanghi does! Pretty good stuff. I'm alre...

    Very Gripping

The Nine series is a remarkable cusp of fact anf fiction. The gripping and thrilling built up story will leave the readers 2 feet above the geround. Apart from thrill the thought and message given is the main focus. We have a past, we are in present and we will have a future. A strong line of truth links these stages of life. What we hear, what we see has more to do with us. Read it to realise it !!!!!

    another leaf in the NINEverse

The reason i picked this book was to further explore the NINEverse after i read Mahabharta Secret which also has mention of NINE unknown in it.
The book is remarkably fast read, and you get hooked to it till the last page. This one is a well researched book and the author's way of writing makes it easy to comprehend the situations. The book builds the characters, the background story, importance of NINE in the world was however tad bit less, and all the action amassed for the late second hal...

    Impressive initiative

I haven't read much of appealing fantasy fiction from Indian writers. Earlier on, I read Samit Basu and it was like strictly ok. Nothing major but I was surprised to pick up this book and find out that it was a woman who was writing fantasy in India. I was very pleased and completed the entire novel in two days.
Why has good always reigned over the bad? Evil has it own glory too. Shobha Nihalaini completes the book on a high yet leaves enough doubt in the reader's mind for them to visit again...

    A fantasy thriller

A lovely read for anyone who loves thriller kind of fantasy books. I don't know why but I enjoyed the villain's side of the story more than the heroes' side, i.e. the trio of the nine. Vayu, possessed by a wandering evil spirit is keen on revenge on the society of the nine and he wants to destroy the world. A very intriguing plot. Must read book.

A melting pot of a book

Fantasy is not what I usually read but I was happy to grasp NINE because of the interesting backdrop of Asoka and a secret society. Asoka happens to be my favourite emperor in Indian history and this book has cleverly merged history with fantasy and philosophy. It ends up becoming something of a melting pot and pleases the reader in the process. You have romance, horror, tragedy, history, fantasy and spiritualism. I could so relate to the characters of Zubin and Tara though I found Akash a li...

    Too realistic for fantasy

The good thing about Shobha Nihalini's writing is that she makes it seem all too realistic, twice I had to remind myself that I was reading only a book and that too a fantasy fiction title! The research and the documented facts that the writer has made use of are truly insightful and captivating. I throughly enjoyed the book because of this. It's nice to know about Asoka's world and the secret society of the NINE which in reality existed. I'm waiting for the next book in the series.
