Nine Lives: In Search of the Sacred in Modern India (Paperback) Price: Rs.311

Award-winning, critically acclaimed, internationally bestselling William Dalrymple takes us to the heart of an undiscovered India.

A Buddhist monk takes up arms to resist the Chinese invasion of Tibet ??? then spends the rest of his life trying to atone for the violence by hand printing the best prayer flags in India. A Jain nun tests her powers of detachment as she watches her best friend ritually starve herself to death.

Nine people, nine lives; each one taking a different religious path, each one an unforgettable story. William Dalrymple delves deep into the heart of a nation torn between the relentless onslaught of modernity and the ancient traditions that endure to this day.

Great Read

This is book about the lives of nine different people trying to find their spiritual moksha.

The lives of the protagonists are at the center of each story. The author only gives necessary back ground information.

Extremely well written and a great read.

Good research in deed, a a must read for everybody who wanna know about true India

Dalrymple known for his research based on culture, is for sure given a treat for those who wanna know few of the many other facets of Indian culture.
Definitely India is not just a bucket of vEdic juices; it also has a various modified, localized, manifested forms of the culture which for sure comes out of those same "moola". But yeah it is these traditions and smears of culture which gives India its special notion of diversity; and for sure they should be saved for future too; Not in a negative essence, put in a positive annointment which beautifies our integrity.

A lot of people in India doesn't know that even these faces of mother India exists; or probably even if they know considers them as insane; but it is not true - there is a special peculiar beauty in every face; It is just that, we need some William Dalrymple to explain those beauties in a well intelligible way.

After reading this I ascertain that every individual will start looking at others in a different blessed way. Start understanding all perspectives, notions and different demeanor of people which represents their respectable different backgrounds.

Surely if people get educated in this way about actual India and its reality, there is no need for a single channel in any regard for India to get in unison.

Surely this one is a must read non-fiction.

Nine Sacred Tales

I read the book a few months ago which caught my imagination repeatedly. It has brought me still closer to the traditions and arts which are slowly losing out in the din of modernity and affluence. I feel that we have lost the sense of smelling the soil where our roots are fixed. Such a loss of sensitivity is making us rootless.
All the nine lives shake my consciousness thoroughly. The way they are struggling to keep the culture live is heartening. The battle they are losing slowly and steadily spell a pal of gloom and makes us sorry for not passing on a colourful heritage to our next generation.
The book made me a fan of William Darlymple and made me read his other books. Hats Off !!!

A Great Read

This book by Mr. Dalrymple is an amazing book in which he captures the lives of nine people each from different walks of life following a different religious path.

Through reading this book, one gets aware about some of the old traditions and practices of our country which are slowly getting lost in history. For someone who really appreciates the culture of this country and is keen to know about the same (without any bias), this book is a must read.

Thank you Mr. Dalrymple for writing such a great book and introducing us to nine lives, nine stories.
