Nirmala is a book published in the year 1928, which throws light on the life of young women when they are married to individuals much older than themselves.
Summary Of The Book
Nirmala revolves around the life of Nirmala, who is a 15-year-old girl. She is forced to marry an elderly man, who was a widower and had three sons.
She was no left with other option due to the fact that her parents were extremely poor and could not give any dowry to the prospective groom. From his first marriage, Totaram had three boys, who were as old as Nirmala.
Things begin to take a turn when Nirmala begins to find her true love in Totaram’s oldest son. This causes Totaram to become extremely jealous, forcing him to separate them before things get out of control. His son dies as a result of comminatory sickness, which leaves Nirmala harassed by the fear that she played a role in his death.
Nirmala is considered an open accusation to the confused patriarchal society, it gives the readers information about the time prior to the feminist movement in the nation of India.
About Munshi Premchand
Munshi Premchand was a renowned Indian author who contributed greatly to Hindi-Urdu literature.
The author has written over 12 novels, 250 short stories, as well as numerous essays. Some of the novels written by the author include Rangbhoomi, Kaayakalp, and Karmabhoomi.
The author is known to be first writer who incorporated realism in his literary works. His publications were fuelled with a passion to increase awareness of issues faced by individuals around India. Some of the subjects covered by the author include corruption, feudal system, poverty, child widowhood and colonialism. During his stay at Kanpur in the 1900’s, the author began to include his views on politics in the early parts of his career. The teachings of Swami Vivekananda also had a great impact on the author.
Premchand was born on the 31st of July 1880 in Lamhi, Varanasi. His actual name was Dhanpat Rai, however, he often wrote using the pen name “Nawab Rai”, followed by an alternate name, “Premchand”. Munshi is the title of great honour placed before his name. He passed away on the 8th October 1936, as a result of being very sick for a number of days.

Legendary NovelThere is no doubt that Premchand is one of the greatest Hindi writer we had. I found Nirmala is a great portrayal of human nature and doubts and thinking. I could relate it to today's society and its thinking even after 80 years.
