1 year of the 5800

My son convinced me that this was a good phone for him at a time when I didnt know the difference between capacitative and resistive touchscreens (this one's resistive). The symbian operating system was touted as being new and it seemed to be able to interact with outlook for emails. I wished for a hard qwerty keyboard but thought I would manage with a soft keyboard. And then my Motorola Q suddenly gave up its ghost and so I had to move double quick and convince him to give it to me.

One year later, the phone battery has never run out on me except once recently when I didnt charge it fully the night before. The hardware has been rock solid as is the case with most Nokia phones. I've had no problem with calls and messages. Taking photos and videos were easy. Uploading and listening to music was dead easy and reasonably good quality. Bluetooth worked well on the few occasions I transferred files to another phone. The brightlight app I dowloaded makes this phone an impressive torch. The editor and bible download apps too work well. However the internet and email software (connection manager) is counterintuitive and I need to keep finding out why I am not getting connected either through my Airtel connection or WiFi. My emails are a bugbear despite several versions of various apps that I've tried (suggestions anyone?) Getting to a contact to phone out needs atleast 3-5 clicks for some unfathomable symbian reason. You can cheat by putting in a space after the first letter of common names so that it appears quicker while searching on the contacts. The home screen doesnt landscape on rotating the phone (every other screen does). I cant change the home screen details beyond a point. Soft qwerty typing sucks for those with big fingers and also because the page you are typing on disappears and the sentence appears in a box above the keyboard disconnecting you from main document and making scrolling through for editing cumbersome (wake up symbian). Accessing files and syncing with my computer is easy but just try scrolling through a long MS Word document with your finger! I really long for a hard scroll button. It hangs once in a week or two and needs a hard reboot which fortunately is not a long drawn out process.

So the hardware is impeccable. The software leaves a lot to be desired (sorry Microsoft haters but wish I had the windows software I was using on the motorola Q). My son doesnt particularly want it back.

My 5800 is now 3years old and running :D

I must say, it was pretty expensive for a phone back when I bought it. It was a time when touch screen smart phones were still making an entry into the market.

Took me a lot of time to think about if I actually wanted to buy it, and finally bought it on the day of Diwali in 2009.

I haven't had any problems so far, (apart from the battery degrading over time - but 1 battery change after 3 years isn't bad by any standards.).

It plays almost any kind of sound file, most videos, the camera isn't shabby. For a 3 year old piece of technology, it still serves me very well. It even has applications for Whatsapp and dropbox. Couldn't complain less.

Once you get used to the touch screen (resistive), its not so bad. It actually feels harder to use the capacitive touchscreens, making them feel super sensitive.

As for the sturdiness of the phone. Excellent. I've dropped it a million times over the past 3 years, the covering on the back panel is peeling off a little bit. Other than that no other damage - performance hasn't been affected, the screen is very strong and doesn't crack as easily as the samsung phones.

The battery life before the battery problem was a minimum of 2-3 days (with texting and around 30 mins of music every day), all the way upto 5 days if no music.

The reason I give it 4/5 and not 5 is because there are some features missing, like being able to mark items without having to go to options -> mark. Also the default browser could have been better, a bit more ram. (seeing as i think I have hardly 80MB?) But for a device manufactured that long ago, I guess hardware shouldn't be something I should be complaining about.

Running without any issues over the last 4 years

My thoughts after approx 4 years of usage. Bought this phone mid May 2009.

1. It fell from terrace twice, yet working without any issues.
2. Forgot the phone in rain one complete night, yet working without any issues
3. Got soaked in rain several times during transit, yet working without any issues
4. Accidentally fell into swimming pool, yet working without any issues
5. I met with a gruesome accident and finally it had some scratches on its lower back. STILLL WORKING RELENTLESSLY
6. Didn't change the battery and still get about 3 days of charging on Voice calls, 1.5 days on moderate 3G internet usage. and roughly 1 day for wifi and 3G usage.

All features are working as they were on day-1.

Wifi
3G
Bluetooth.
Filesharing.
Touch.
Videos.
Camera..
Battery not changed and still as usuall

Everything in tact and nothing seems to deter so much.. Want a wonderful build quality.. :) . Perhaps the best..

Flipside:

1. I do sometimes have problem connecting the phone to 3G mode and use internet on my laptop.. But once it connects, speed is as as fast as a cable modem..
2. No USB charging.

I am going to get a Windows OS on this little marvel soon...

Suggestion, Why not NOKIA improve the processor and RAM performance on this device?

Farewell review

On the of the most trusted phone I had ever seen in the market in this price range.

I purchased it in January 2009 and have been using this without any problem. It still looks as fresh and as new like before with just some scratches on screen (which is normal for touch screen phone after such long usage).

What I wonder is that price of this phone did not decrease at all during 2/3 years (Rs. 100 or 200 price cut is not worthy for such smart phones) which may be record for smart phones in this category.

I think this is the last successful smart of Nokia. After that NX, CX series phones could not perform well like this.
