The first novel by Indian banking-professional-turned-writer Ajay Mohan Jain, Nothing Can Be As Crazy... is about an insipid middle-class man’s journey from the restlessness of youth to maturity.
Summary Of The Book
Suresh Chandra starts working as a Probationary Officer in a nationalised bank with a lot of curiosity. Despite his background as a technocrat, he decides to pursue a banking career, and thus begins the ‘crazy’ roller-coaster ride that throws many astonishing circumstances at him.
Ajay Mohan Jain creates a prototype of the middle-class urban Indian through the character of Suresh. The protagonist is drawn by the prospect of exciting new experiences, but still tugged by the values imbibed in him due to his traditional upbringing. Many a time, he is left confused by the friction caused by the clashing of his so-called middle-class morals with the liberal outlook he comes across in a modern metropolis. Destiny has its own plans for him, and he inadvertently finds himself at crossroads at different points in life. He is caught in a dilemma of whether to try and change his destiny or come to terms with it. Does he make the right choices?
Nothing Can Be As Crazy... captures the travails of a middle-class man’s existence effectively. It also exposes the common traits like hypocrisy and male chauvinism, which are rooted deep inside an average Indian man’s psyche. The cutthroat world of professionals is also described interestingly. The book has several autobiographical overtones of the writer, who himself was a technocrat and management graduate, but had decided to become a banking professional. Through the course of the story, Suresh’s youthful rashness gets tempered with maturity, which comes with age and experience.
With mostly favourable reviews to its credit, Nothing Can Be As Crazy... has become a bestselling novel since its publication in late 2009. The book was included in the list of bestsellers of eminent publications like The Hindu and India Today.
