First published in the year 1951, The Old Man And The Sea is a book that revolves around the life of a fisherman named Santiago, and his struggle with a huge marlin in the Gulf stream.
Summary Of The Book
In the beginning of The Old Man And The Sea, the readers are introduced to the protagonist, who is unable to catch a single fish for 84 days. As a result of him not being able to catch any fish, Santiago is labeled “Salao”, which indicates the highest degree of unluckiness. This causes the parents of one of his young apprentices to bar him from travelling with the protagonist, but venture out for fishing only with successful fishermen.
However, Manolin, his apprentice was faithful to Santiago, and visited him regularly. One day, Santiago reveals his plan to Manolin. The plan involves travelling far into the Gulf Stream, with the intention to put an end to this rough patch in his fishing career. On the 85th day, Santiago sets out on his journey, along with his skiff, into the Gulf Stream. A marlin falls prey to his bait, and the old man struggles to get the fish onto his boat. This battle between the marlin and Santiago continues for three days, leaving both parties absolutely exhausted. At the end of the third day, the fish began to circle the skiff, which indicates that it was fatigued, and the old man pulled it in his boat, stabbing it. The battle wasn’t over yet, as the trail of blood from the marlin attracts sharks towards the boat.
Santiago killed the first shark with his harpoon, and lost it in the process. He makes a new weapon, and continues to battle with an ever-increasing trail of sharks. Will Santiago make it through this intense battle? This book answers these questions and more. The Old Man And The Sea was greatly appreciated by its readers, and fetched Hemingway the Pulitzer Prize For Fiction in the year 1953. It was also considered the reason behind him being awarded the Nobel Prize For Literature. The book was published in 1952.

Terrible printThe book is an old favourite of mine and I recently decided to buy myself a new copy (the old one has fallen victim to the borrowed-and-never-returned curse). Most annoyingly, this particular print is rife with terrible typos. I am unable to get through a single page without wanting to tear the pages apart. You- the seller- have ruined Hemingway for me a little bit. Shame on you.

The old man and the seaThis is a story of an old man who hasn’t been able to catch a fish for last 84 days. People start calling him “Salao”, worst form of unluck and make fun of him. A young boy believes in him and goes to fishing with man as he believes there’s a lot to learn from old man. Although he has to go for fishing with some other guys at end because of his parent’s will but he’s unhappy about decision and wants to be with old man. On 85th day old man goes alone and he catches a fish (which turns out to be a giant fish). Story turns around then when man has to spend 3 days in water and fish is not giving u… (Expand)

Physical quality of the bookThis is a review of the physical quality of the book rather than the reading matter presented in the book itself. A review of this book can be found anywhere online. But if you are planning to order this copy, and if you're a bibliophile like me, then you'd want to know about the physical quality of the book you are going to get your hands on.

terrible mistakebefore buying from this publishing house you ought to be aware of the fact that it is terrible as far as typographical mistakes are concerned. so many mistakes that i had to re-read the whole sentence to just get the idea as to what the character is really saying. the cover has a fake gloss that gets removes easily when scratched. wanted to buy this for so long but this publisher has definitely spoiled the whole mood . the rating is striclty made with keeping in mind the publisher's efforts of representation.

The Old man and the Sea.I ordered this book in Flipkart. I received it the next day. Reading a classic requires lot of patience. This book is not an ordinary book to browse. It must be read very deeply and slowly. Its a real master piece, and for an extra information this Novel has no female characters.

What you make out of life! We've been raised by a thought that at the end everything goes well. The prince happily marries the princess, the poor becomes rich and the bad characters pay for their sins. Thats a reason why probably we become frustrated when things don't go as per the thought.

Why does this have 4 stars? For the sellers, the quality of the book is obviously a joke. Shame on Flipkart for even listing this on their site. Aside from the fact that the book cover is faded for some reason (look at the icon picture), the page quality and print are laughable. Too many typo errors tarnish the last of Hemingway's classics and this to me, is an insult to world literature.

A story of an undefeated ManIt's first time that I was reading Hemingway. Nobody really suggested me this book. I just found out it here only, in the Flipkart. I like to roam around in the Book section, cruise through all those lovely and tempting books.

If the reading gets bored, you might get lost into sea like the old man... :PLike the old man in the book you might get lost into sea literally, if you get bored in between. The language is simple, even though you might find it difficult for some of the fishing related terms.
