Oleander Girl is the story of Korobi Roy, a seventeen-year-old girl who was orphaned at birth. She hopes to find true love, but a dark family secret decides a different life for her.

    Summary of the Book

Korobi Roy was orphaned at birth and lives with her grandparents who take very good care of her. She hardly has any memories of her parents, except for an incomplete love note that she found in her mother’s book of poetry. She is troubled by the silence that surrounds the death of her parents and wishes that one day she too will find true love that is as powerful as that of her parents. She meets the charming Rajat and it seems as though her wish might have come true. However, Korobi’s grandfather dies on the night of their engagement and some hidden secrets have come out into the open that shatters Korobi. She leaves behind her comfortable life in Kolkata and goes to America. She finds America unwelcoming and dangerous, yet alluring at the same time. She soon discovers something that will force her to make the most difficult decision of her life.

Poignant tale which flows like a poem

Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni reveals the Bengali society through her new book Oleander Girl. The emotions of a protective mother, the turmoil inside a rich youngster, the worries of a widowed grandmother, the strong will of a young modern girl, even the emotions and thoughts of a driver and ,last but not the least, the hindu-muslim quarrels inside a workplace- the author brings all these out through a poignant and touching tale about the human character- how a man crosses limits to keep his gra...

    Not Chitra's best,but worth a read. :)

Chitra Divakaruni had touched my heart with her powerful prose in "The palace of Illusions'' and I wanted to read more by her..so I ordered it.
The book arrived in perfect condition and the quality is superb! The only drawback: The plot. It's nothing exceptional..not what you'd be expecting from an author like her. The four stars is for Flipkart's service, the story deserves 3 stars only.
Girl lives alone in huge mansion, falls in love with a boy, grandparent expires on her engagement day,she fi...

    Beautifully written

Chitra D B never disappoints her readers. Oleander girl set in Kolkata is mystically woven tale about a young woman who is shocked to learn about the secrets of her late mother. As usual, its compelling and every character makes a mark.. Korobi or the Oleander girl is simply wonderful

Leave the past where it belongs

It's futile to go behind a secrets, the more you dig more filth one discovers is the Crux of the novel 'Oleander Girl'. Each characters in the novel are beautifully etched out, the reason behind guarding a secret by dead grand father Bimal Prasad Roy really makes sense in the end. For love to blossom honesty, simplicity and loyalty is more important and not the physical beauty, wealth or status". Despite all odds and difficulties Rajat understands what he wants in life and unites with Kor...

    Oleander Girl

Beautiful coming of age story written by an author who understands the nuances of different cities, and how they can influence a person. Chitra stays true to her characters. They speak the language of the place they're in and she can easily describe the feelings of an old woman and a young bride in the same sentence.
While I would have wanted something more drastic as an ending, Oleander Girl still doesn't disappoint. It's sweet and an easy read.

Oleander Girl - A Journey to Remember

I have always been a big fan of Chitra BD's books. I just love her style of writing - subtle yet extremely complex; descriptive, often to the point of being easy to visualize and yet shrouded with the human characteristic elements. When I read about Oleander Girl being on offer, it took less than a moment to decide on buying it. And there it was delivered to me within a day and in perfect shape with all the pages intact, very good condition (it was definitely not a defective copy) and a wonde...

    Good for one time read

Kudos to Flipkart for their prompt delivery and great packaging..But I rated the book a four star as I found the storyline to be flawed and not gripping..found most of the characters to be stereotypical..
