  • Description

Once Upon a Crush is a contemporary romance novel about the thrills and pitfalls of an office romance.

    Summary of the Book

Rayna De has a lot of things going for her. Not that they're going well, of course. Her thirties are approaching fast and she's stuck in a dead end job with a boss who's clearly from hell. Her love life is non-existent. When Devan Ahuja enters the workplace, Rayna falls head over heels for him. Sadly, he's out of her league. He is sending her contradictory messages. According to the Page Three supplements, he seems to be happy with his model-turned-actress girlfriend. Her parents aren't helping by waving the photographs of Sid Bose in her face, trying to lure her with the much-desired salary package, three bedroom house et. al. Rayna thinks things couldn't get more confusing. She must think again, for fate has other plans.

Laughed for the entire duration of the book!

I bought Once Upon A Crush on a Friday evening. I was supposed to go for a dinner date that night but once I started reading the book, there was no chance I was putting it down till I knew whether Rayna ends up with Deven! In so many ways, I think Rayna and her friends' lives mirrored what life is like for me and my friends in Mumbai. The dragon boss of hers, hopeless crushes on unattainable guys, dealing with cheats, matchmaking aunties, parents who wonder if you're gay because you never int...

    Too grossing details

So let me start off by saying that I usually don't like chic-lits but this one I liked because partially it was my story. Written with engrossing details, Kiran Manral gets too much into describing the inner conscious of the protagonist, Rayna De, that she loses the plot.

Otherwise, an interesting read. Although, I am little far from reaching my 30 but this one was just my story. Except for me, D huja is a client and not my colleague. *Winks*

    Rating- Four stars.. Light read.

Kiran Manral knows how to make me laugh

Kiran Manral's style of writing is so rare among the authors one is reading these days. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and laughed through it.
Once upon a crush is a book about the life, love and dilemmas of a single girl living in Mumbai. It is not just an office romance infused with Manral's self-deprecating humour, it is also a revealing peek into the lives of the twenty somethings of this generation.
If you are looking for breezy read and a good laugh then this is exactly the kind of bo...

    A book lover's delight

The cover design of 'Once Upon a Crush' with slightly smudged heart and red-coloured lipstick, sets the mood for the fun, light-hearted pleasure that this book is.

Rayna De is the main protagonist of 'Once Upon a Crush'. She's independent, about to turn 30 and has not love life. Her parents are after her to get married.
She has a crush on Deven Ahuja - Rayna compares him to Edward Cullen and Mr Darcy. Oh, and he has cheekbones comparable to Benedict Cumberbatch.

The stage is thus set for th...

    Gripping plot and eloquent English

Once Upon a Crush has a gripping plot, a story that you can relate to and most interestingly the English is far better than many contemporary writers.

Most of all, there is a never a dull moment in the story, except the few instances when the eloquent writer in her takes over and she goes overboard in describing a certain point, like for example describing Rayna's relationship with 'Pixie' and her feelings for 'Devan Ahuja'.

But honestly, after a long time, I have come across a book which ...

Once Upon a Crush- Funny and insightful

Kiran Manral can make even the most apparently mundane office romance hilariously funny. With her trademark exaggerations and hyperbole, every second sentence (at least) will have you chuckling. From ratty underwear to friends who affectionately hail each other with the choicest epithets to a boss from hell, greasy haired Mathur as a colleague "Wot", nosy neighbours and a whole lot of Bengaliness tossed in for good measure, the parents/mater with their long-distance attempts at matchmaking, a...

    Unputdownable

This one is unputdownable. Don't be fooled by its chick-lit title. Its more than that. I am not a big chick-lit fan, but this book is just brilliant. The slightly sardonic humor is right up my alley and the characters are all crafted very well. Subtle social commentary appears in places, but does not take away from the lightness of the book. A great beach read. you will not be disappointed.
