  • Description

Unlike most Indian immigrants, Amara Malhotra is not destined to achieve the American Dream. Much to the anxiety of her parents - the spirited Biji and the doting Baba - Amara leads an unremarkable life. That is, until she marries Harvard-educated millionaire, Prashant Roy.

However, this fairy-tale isn’t meant to last, and even as Amara’s marriage collapses, she finds herself returning to the land of her birth, to the small city of Shimla. Here, in a borough grappling with questions of modernity, Amara is caught in a tug-of-war between old beliefs and new ones, between parents who favour obedience and new friends who encourage independent thought.

With powerful insights, One and a Half Wife traces the coming-of-age of multiple characters, while re-defining family, relationships and love in contemporary India.

    Amara rocks

Amara Malhotra - the protagonist - rocks! She is more than a one-and-a-half wife. I would love to marry a girl like her.

I like Biji too. She reminds me of my mother.

Is there a sequel to this novel?

    A Highly Recommended Book

Every book has a story to tell. Meghna Pant’s debut novel One and A Half Wife tells a story which will take you through various territories, some comfortable and some not so comfortable. However, the incidents and the ensuing emotions attached will seem extremely familiar which will help you to connect to the story easily.
The story incorporates a lot of aspects like Indian obsession of settling in the USA during the 1990s, the hardships which the families had to bear while trying to make the...

    One and a Half Wife

excellent read.... The characters are realistic and reflects the true mentality of middle class Indians. The author has beautifully described the troubles which one experience whilst settling abroad. No matter how modern India s becoming but there's a long way before the mindsets actually comprehend the change.

    definitely worth every dime.

    Great Characters! Good Debut.

Amara and Biji! The book's worth just its price just so you get to know these characters. The writing style is elegant and was really impressed with this being written by a debut author. I am looking forward to her next book. I do wonder how she came up with the name of the book - so unique. Refreshing indeed.

    One and a half wife

A good read after a long time. Story shows how a simple girl next door can turn strong, independent and extra ordinary. What is also interesting is reverse attitude of society in America compared to India. Such a whiff of fresh air.

    Dazzling

Every once in a while a book comes along that reminds you why you love to read. One & A Half Wife has got an absorbing story that pulls you right in, it's pacy such that you will not be able to put it down, and the characters stay with you long after you finish reading. It's insightful while also being funny, and very well-written. The theme is also timely, capturing the wave of the confident new India, the slow fall of the US, reverse immigration, divorce and modernism that is gripping our c...

    Highly Recommended

I loved this book. It is an easy read and once you start, you would not want to part with it.

There are lot of issues and topics that the author has handled with immense care - like immigration, life and ways of Indians abroad... and mainly divorce.

Amara is a character everyone will identify with, feel for and root for as well.
I hope you give this book a try, it is worth it.

    One and a Half Wife

One and a Half Wife is a brilliant book by an Indian author in a long time. The maturity with which Meghna Pant treats the subject of immigration, divorce and reverse-immigration among the 'one and a half generation' Indian-Americans is commendable. The characters are tightly chalked out and leave a long lasting impression on the reader, even after the book is done. It is easy to connect with the characters and you feel like you are actually a part of the life of the people in the book.
