One Hundred Years of Solitude (English) (Paperback) Price: Rs.219

One Hundred Years Of Solitude, a literary masterpiece by the Nobel Laureate, is a metaphoric mirror to Colombian history. The contemplative novel drapes the tale of the rise and fall of Macondo and magically captures the life and times of the Buendia family over seven generations.

Summary Of The Book

Set in a fictional town called Macondo in Northern Colombia, One Hundred Years Of Solitude begins with Jose Arcadio Buendia leaving his hometown with his wife Ursula, in search of a better life. One night during their journey, they happen to camp at a riverside where Jose dreams about a spectacular city and decides to establish one on the same riverbank. Thus, he builds Macondo and slowly shapes it into how he wants a city to be.

Macondo then begins to miraculously attract unusual people and extraordinary events that make for a gripping plot. The adventurous Buendias find themselves in the middle of some of the most historically potent circumstances in Colombia. As the lineage stands in the face of the glory and downfall of a civilization, Marquez's lyrical magic manifests the delicate nuances of love and war, youth and senility, and passion and lust. And finally, what had started as an innocent dream of Jose, Ursula and 19 other families gradually break down and fall prey to lawless anarchy.

One Hundred Years Of Solitude also chronicles the political and economic developments of the 19th century Colombia, such as corruption and capitalism with a touch of fiction. In a deeply touching and thought provoking non-linear narrative, Marquez paints a hundred years of history on the canvas of time. He uses his prerogative of having witnessed the wave of the Colombian revolution to graphically depict its lasting influence. He arrests in prose, the magical realism surrounding life, death, peace and the truth of mankind.

Written originally in Spanish, One Hundred Years Of Solitude was published first in 1967. It has since been translated into 37 languages and sold more than 20 million copies worldover. A recipient of global acclaim and numerous awards, the book won Marquez his Nobel Prize in 1982. This English version is translated by Gregory Rabassa.

EXCELLENT BOOK BUT THE WORST EDITION

WARNING:
Don't buy the PENGUIN INDIA EDITION........ITS PATHETIC.

I just got the book today, and been through 50 or so pages, and the narrative technique is so cool and alluring that it seems the novel is just awesome.i'll surely write a full riview once i finish the novel,SO FOR THE START I GIVE FIVE STARS.......hope I won't regret!!!!!!!And also thanks to Flipkart for delivering the book within 48hours...amazing.
But the urgent need to write this short riview is to warn people not to go for the PENGUIN INDIA PUBLICATION EDITION OF 1996. But WHY????
THE COVER LOOKS SO BEAUTIFUL, BUT ONCE...

THE COVER LOOKS SO BEAUTIFUL, BUT ONCE I GOT THE BOOK AND OPENED IT.............MAN I WAS SHATTERED !!!!Did they priced this crap for 399Rs!!!!!(I bought it for249) The pages are just as bad as you can get, pages are like the pages you would find in some cheap books sold in local trains, or in footpaths.the print quality is also too bad, like some cheap newspaper printing. I just can't imagine what does Penguin think Indian customers are???? This book is meant to be sold only in the Indian subcontinent...... Are we so cheap as readers that we deserve this kind of editions even at 399 Rs??Why do they treat the Indian subcontinent customer so differently?? Can they answer...And I've bought 10 to 12 books from Penguin india , and they always seem to produce under quality products for the subcontinent........but this time its really beyond acceptance.....So go for other editions but not this one....

A Great Masterpiece Printed in Worst Materials

I ordered this book along with Chronicle of a Death Foretold. Both books by Penguin India. But the quality of books in two extremes. This book printed on some scrap papers. Very very bad quality.
Am suspecting someone is printed this book on behalf of Penguin India. Their Logos misplaced. No hologram, No trade mark stickers.
Still wonder why Flipkart is very careless since lots of people already complained many times here.
Very sad to see such a great Masterpiece is printed worst papers.

I rate books quality 1 out of 5. I didn't find any lesser rating.
No issues with 'Chronicle of a Deat...

Wonder-esque!

If one wonders why Marquez was awarded a Nobel, then this is the answer to such groundless doubts!

'Magic Realism' isn't everybody's cup of tea. He is an expert, the doyen in this genre. Mortals like me can't write a review for such masterpieces.
Let my words cease. Grab a copy and devour it NOW!

As a matter of fact, I read its pdf! That was quite an excruciating task for someone who can't stand e-books. But, it was Garcia's spell that kept me enchanted for two whole days!
I can comfortably say that those were the 48 hours of sheer bliss...
P.S. Pelt stones at me if the climax does not...

Garcia's vision of Latin America is Awesome

I am glad I picked up and read this book. The world that Garcia creates has you spellbound till the last sentence of the book. Even though there is no suspense in the book, you would await how the next set of Buendia's would torment and self destruct themselves, for death also awaits and enjoys their egoistic and some time masochistic lives.

I really liked the female characters, which are even proclaimed as doomed by one of the male Buendias.

The narrative is imaginative, thought provoking and succeeds in painting the Macondo town in your imagination. I would definitely want to read more...

Not for people who would not let go their imagination to be manipulated by Garcia through his prose, vivid canvas he paints and the tribulations of life, dispersed through out the book.

It took me three days to finish this book. What is so special about this book? It grips you. Gabriel Garcia MArquez's narrative binds you in a spell and keeps you enchanted. Each and every character is so beautifully written that you feel their presence inside. you feel for Ursula at one time. You feel for colonel. How can some one write so beautifully and still leave you hungry for more? This book is an amazing piece of post modern literature. Something you cannot explain, This book is alive. i would like to thank flipkart too. Even though i received a bad copy, they refunded my money and... ()

Justice to literature

Marquez has got story telling talent. The books is good but you will eventually get bored out of the monotonous and expected creations, but some characters are worth pondering upon. (View complete review)

too long

The impression I had was that this story could have been told in less words than used. It went on and on and on and I couldn't see why. The closing of the story made me question as to whether there was any point of the story... the exercise seemed futile in the end. (View complete review)
