Karsten Steiger's Opera Discography is the standard work in the field of audio and video recordings of complete operas. The second edition - which has more than doubled the scope of the first - lists all opera performances which have been recorded from the very first complete opera recordings at the beginning of the 20th century up to the present day. It not only documents currently available recordings but also lists those no longer available, together with pirate and 'grey' market pressings. This is currently the most comprehensive and complete listing of opera performances, and was compiled to make it as practical and user-friendly as possible. Details are given of more than 11,500 complete audio and 1,300 complete video recordings, listed by composer and the date of the first performance or work number. Apart from the discographic details of the individual recordings, data are provided on the exact name of the work, the original text, and, where applicable, of different versions of it. Separate indexes of opera titles, conductors and singers provide rapid access to recordings. Thus, for example, it is possible to find all the productions featuring a particular conductor or singer. Altogether, the work lists some 1,000 composers, 2,200 operas and nearly 20,000 persons.
