In Other Words is at heart a love story - of a writer's passion for another language. For Jhumpa Lahiri, that love was for Italian, which first captivated her during a trip to Florence after college. Although Lahiri studied Italian for many years afterward, true mastery eluded her. So in 2012, she decided to move to Rome where she began to read, and to write - initially in her journal - solely in Italian. In Other Words, an autobiographical work written in Italian, investigates the process of learning to express oneself in another language and describes the journey of a writer seeking a new voice.

    Beautifully crafted.

I had and will always be an ardent aficionado of Jhumpa Lahiri. This book was so touching. I realized that language is how much important for a person to stay alive. It's a key to freedom. Thank you for this book. It was beautifully crafted.

    Introspective

A reflective account of the author as she tries to gain authority over a foreign language, and ultimately realising her inability of her ability to do so, while she stays in Rome, Italy. The author starts to write solely in Italian, and maintains a sort of diary. The book is the result of the diary.
Lahiri's first venture into the non-fiction world, that too in a non dominant language, the book is a commendable piece of work. The translation into english from italian by Ann Goldstein, rather...

    To the love of Language!

One of the most personal relationship books I have ever come across, simply the best since it outlines the way the relationship is taken forward, quite a few times it looks as if this is the way love works, may be courtship too.

It’s the growing of the bonds between the seeker and the one which is sought perhaps, here its the language which is being learnt by the author, the language is Italian!

It is quite a revelation at a very personal level for the author the way Italian language grasps...

    Another smash-hit from Lahiri!

This book is 'beautiful', both visually and in words. An autobiographical of Lahiri's attempt to learn, master and write in a foreign language, this book meant a whole lot more since I have just started learning a foreign language myself. Her relationship with the language is a love affair on these pages, a must read for every lover of words!

    A journey and a love-affair with a language

A book written by a Pulitzer prize winning author in Italian and translated by someone else into English may usually seem like a marketing gimmick. But in this case, mostly due to the premise of the book, it did make sense for the author to write the book in Italian. Jhumpa Lahiri via multiple short essays and a few instances of fiction tries to pen down her experience with Italian, from the time she ran into it to the point where she began writing a book in the same language.

    There were mul...

Inspired me to learn a new language!

First to talk about the cover, an absolutely elegant looking hard cover with the author herself posing deep in thought. I'm so inspired by her, taking on a challenge of not only learning but solely writing in another language altogether and having someone else translate the book for her in English. Bravo! Her story and journey towards the love of Italian is so inspiring, I am determined to learn a new language of my own (Though not Italian, from what she's told, it seems pretty tough!) In the...

In Other Words - A highly recommended read!

I had initially hoped that the book might be a collection of travelogues chronicling author’s interactions with Italian, but when I started reading the book, it brought to fore a rather vulnerable, incisive, memoir, nowhere close to what I had imagined it to be.

Divided in short, inspiring chapters with intriguing titles the book takes the reader into the depths of her struggles with the three languages (Bengali, English and Italian) that define the three sides of the literary triangle in h...

A memoir of finding your identity through language

Jhumpa Lahiri’s new book "In Altre Parole" is a memoir written in Italian and translated into English "In Other Words" about her journey to find her identity through language. Born as a Bengali Nilanjana Sudeshna, Jhumpa has recreated herself several times through her books bringing out the issues of exile, alienation and identity. In her first nonfiction attempt she chooses to give us a glimpse of the two years in her life when she moved from USA to Italy where she stayed with her Spanish hu...

    Evocative, self-indulgent, labourious

Note: This book is being reviewed under the Flipkart Book Review Program.
When I received this book in the mail last Sunday, I couldn't wait to start reading it. I started this book yesterday, and today, half-way through the book, I couldn't wait to finish the book as soon as possible.
Learning a new language is difficult. I have tried to learn French, Sanskrit, Japanese, and not been particularly successful at either, though I am keen to continue learning Japanese. Learning a new language b...
