'Mother died today. Or maybe yesterday, I don't know'
Meursault will not lie. Unmoved by his mother's death, he refuses to satisfy the feelings of others by pretending grief. At the end of the funeral, he returns to his simple, batchelor existence in sun-bleached Algiers.
Until he is involved in a violent murder and placed on trial. Will he now, with his life in danger, give in to society's demands and 'play the game'?
Albert Camus's first novel, The Outsider received instant acclaim when it was published in 1942, by Gallimard in Paris, and has been translated into forty-five languages. In 1957 Camus became the youngest writer ever to be awarded the Nobel Prize.

Does life has any meaning ?
This book is a very short read(around 100 pages), but it raises some profound questions. It introduces to you a philosophy called "Existentialism". Though Existentialism is much more than what the novel introduces, it's nevertheless a good starting point.Hemant Katiyar

The protagonist of the book, Merausult (i hope that the spelling is right) is a person who shows little emotions and is a man of less words.Arunabha saha

Meursault will not lie..
This is one of those books, that justify humans being referred to as, the pinnacle of evolution. Brilliant. That's all you can say about it.Sarthak Pranit

A book that will leave you thinking hard
"My mother died today. Or maybe yesterday, I don't know". There hasn't been a shorter and simpler statement that has better described the protagonist of any book that I have read. A dislocation from shock to indifference is gradual yet perceivable. Mersault is the real-life simplistic idealism with a hint of reality; a man who abides to die for the truth, the only God we deserve. This book exposes the farce of extreme philosophy that visits us during melancholy, often obscuring our perception of the truth from the truth itself.Bhagirathy Panth

the outsider
The outsider isnt a book that can just pass. The reason why it is important is because it points out the idiocy of human judgement, i.e. the main character in the book is arrested, for the right reason. Now, his punishment is set on how he has been in the past. By past i amn't referring to his criminal records and the likes but to how he has responded to his mother's death. She died and he didnt really care, hence he was tagged inhumane and stone-hearted. That is what determined his punishment, not his actual crime.
