  • Description

The Pillars of the Earth is a historical novel by Ken Follet. Set in 12th century England, it tells the story of those who are building the greatest Gothic cathedral the world has ever known.

    Summary of the Book

In the 1100s, people undertake the construction of a gargantuan cathedral in an English town. Tom Builder is tasked with the seemingly impossible responsibility of seeing the project to its completion. During the construction of the cathedral, the people in the village change, beginning a conflict between church and state that will pit brother against brother in an epic battle of good against evil. Constantly, the cathedral looms in the background, its completion the sole goal of those who support it, its destruction the ideal of those who see it as a representation of all that is wrong with the Church.

    Hypnotic

This is a great book. A huge book, but the readers won't rest until they have devoured the 1088 pages. The chemistry between Jack and Aliena is something to look out for. Ken Follet is the master story-teller,building the beautiful Kingbridge cathedral with no tool, but a tool which is powerful than most- his pen. A great story.

    Mesmerizing!

Bought this book a month back from flipkart and just finished it a couple of days back. To say the least it was an awesome adventure to read this epic tale. Set into the medieval period (12th century) the plot revolves around the building of a gothic cathedral. The best part about this book is that it reflects almost all the facets of human nature - Pride, Honor, Betrayal, Love, Rage, wisdom and much more. Another thing which I liked about this novel is the level of detail the author has put ...

    Spell Bounding !!!

I am reading this awesome tale these days. There are 1088 pages in this novel and I am on 278th, but must say that this novel is spell bounding.
The speed of the story is good and the narration is awesome. If you have seen some Hollywood movies in which old time England is depicted like Robinhood, then you can easily assume every character in your mind and a film will continuously run in front of your eyes when you will read this novel.
If you can handle a bulky book, then its a must read.

    Something different from Follet

Ken Follet veers from his thriller roots and takes a stab at medieval fantasy. It's a brave move but I have to say the results are decidedly mixed.

The author clearly has done a lot of research on cathedral layouts, styles, history and so on. Indeed he mentions in his foreword that it is something that utterly fascinates him.

The book is a long read and could've done with some serious paring. At it's heart lies the story of a cathedral, its conception and eventual rise.

    The characters are...
