Book: Political Geography Human cultures and political units were natural organic entities, each going, through a natural cycle of birth, maturity, and death. This idea of a developmental stage of a culture gave us a new independent variable for more sophisticated analysis and theory building when coupled with the other variable, the phsycal environment, about which far more was known than in the time of earlier writers. Furthermore, armed with a clearer understanding of the role of nature that this developmental stage idea provided.
