Content: I enjoyed this book. I have a long desire to read it and finally when I got it enjoyed it a lot. This book describes the story of life and society of people in Bengal during the period of 1880 to 1900. This book tries to articulate the advent of renaissance in the state Bengal at that period of history, where Kolkata (Calcutta then), the Indian capital then, was the hub of the activities. That is why the author has named this book as 'Pratham Alo' that literary means 'The First Light'. The novel contains great men in history like Rabindranath Tagore, Devendranath Tagore, Acharya JC Bose, Ramkrishnadev Paramhansa, Swami Vivekananda etc as the leading characters, but to be true to the novel, the hero of this piece of literature is history itself.

This is a historical masterpiece of Sunil Gangopadhayay. Sunil is always renowned for his literary creations based upon Historical platforms. This book takes the reader in the nostalgic era of Golden time of Bengal History when bengali culture was being boosted up with the enormous and magnificent contribution of great personalities form bengal.

I already read this book twice from library. Initially there were two parts of this book. But now Ananda has shaped the large content in a single voluminous edition. This is very good effort.

I am now planning to buy this book from Filpkart. It will always be a very valuable coolection for someone who really loves literature and of course Bengali history, culture and literature.

But I will request Filpkart that if they can give some more discount on this book as they are giving for English Novels it will be surely beneficial.

The book is based on the memorable characters and incidents of the late 19th century and very early 20th century. To know the richness of bengali culture one must read this book. The events are historical and is written in a very informative way. You can know a lot of new things about Swami Vivekananda and also Raindranath Tagore.
At the end of the book, it will come into our mind whether the character named Bharat really existed or not.
Thanks to Sunil Gangopadhay for giving us such an novel which teaches us a lot of things in our life. I think it is the best novel I have ever read in my life.
