Malgudi Schooldays is a tale of Narayan’s popular hero Swami and his friends in the beloved fictional town of Malgudi.

Summary Of The Book

Set in pre-independent India, Malgudi Schooldays revolves around little Swami and his many adventures in the fictional town of Malgudi. Swami, the protagonist, is a young boy who does not really enjoy school. Often indulging in pranks, school for Swami is a terrible burden.

Gazing at trains, entertaining himself by noting different hairstyles and caps, breaking the principal’s window, and running away from school are just a few of the antics that comprise the schooldays of the protagonist.

Swami, Somu, Mani, Samuel and Shankar are very good friends who often indulge in adventures together. But the dynamics are all about to change when the intelligent and bold Rajam enters the group. The Malgudi Cricket Club or MCC is started and Swami is elected to be the team’s bowler. A star of the team, Swami soon is faced with a new problem. He has to attend the school drill and the cricket coaching at the same time.

How will Swami handle the new boy? Will Swami be able to attend the cricket coaching? Or will his misadventures get him into further trouble? Malgudi Schooldays is a highly invigorating account of the nostalgic school days of Swami and his friends.

Written from the perspective of the young troublemaker, the book revisits the innocence, imagination, and simpler times of childhood.

This edition of Malgudi Schooldays by Penguin classics was published in 2009 and is popular among the young and old alike. It is inclusive of an introduction by Shashi Deshpande.

About R. K. Narayan

Rasipuram Krishnaswami Iyer Narayanaswami was one of India’s best known writers, teachers, and reporters.

Some of his best loved works are Swami And Friends, The Financial Expert, The Man-Eater Of Malgudi, The Vendor Of Sweets, The Bachelor Of Arts, The Guide, The Dark Room, and Mr. Sampath.

Rightly regarded as a painter of words, Narayan’s works were loved for his simple, descriptive, and unpretentious narratives. Most of his writing was a portrayal of everyday Indian life, focusing on the common man. Realism and humour are the other key elements of his books.

Born in Chennai, Narayan completed his schooling there and in Mysore. He got his bachelor’s degree from Maharaja College of Mysore. Narayan is the recipient of popular awards like the Padma Vibhushan and the Sahitya Akademi Award. He was also conferred Honorary Doctorates by the University of Mysore, Delhi University, and the University of Leeds. Many of his books have been adapted into into movies and series. He was married to Rajam and had a daughter Hema.

Picturesque-just like their imaginary town Malgudi!

I have read this book zillion times and i still find it humorous and enjoyable.I laugh and extract pleasure from reading the delights of a ten year old, just like a ten year old.
And the simple and elegant imagery produces a live effect which feels like watching a movie or living in the book itself.
Swaminathan's innocence, his resentment towards going to school every Monday morning after an amusing weekend, shuddering at the thought of that yellow building Albert Mission, his feuds with the brutish christian teacher Mr. Ebenezer and his fanatic aggression towards Hinduism, gallivanting endl...

Ebenezer and his fanatic aggression towards Hinduism, gallivanting endlessly with his Rajam and Mani, his preparations for the requisite for the examinations and his unbound joy after the termination of the session, everything reminds you of your own childhood when you viewed the world through a colored glass.
Also when his friends ingenuously try to name their cricket team, all the practices for the match with the local champions, the events following it, albeit a little obscure and murky but making you will for it to never end.
I resort to reading it during my gloomy hours and it does the work of a balm.
My gratitude to Lt.Mr.R.K.Narayan for producing such an exceptional piece of literature.
And I would refer it to all the lovers of good reads.

Classic Buy.

I just got it at hand yesterday. and the first story is obviously awesome. I think this is a good book and worth every penny. It's cheap yet it's a good buy. I bought this book as a gift for my younger brother. But i am going to read it first and then 'maybe' let him have it.

Those of you who are thinking to buy it, definitely do so. You will love it. I promise. =].

Gets me nostalgic!

I am a big fan of Mr. RK Narayan, he is one of the best novelist of Indian literature. Malgudi Schooldays portray Swami "the protagonist" as a character we could all relate to one way or the other. I have read a previous novel of the same series, way back but reading again about the lovely Swami I feel full of enthusiasm remembering the mischieves we use to do in our childhood. A must buy for all the youngsters & elders who want to relive their past moments again.

Good book!

Good book, worth buying. Reminds you of the serial MALGUDI DAYS which was telecast long back on DD.

But this book has exactly the same matter as another book called SWAMI AND FRIENDS. Since i ended up buying both the books and realised my mistake later. Somebody should have mentioned this in atleast one of the reviews. So that is what I am doing here.

Hats-off to the flipkart team for delivery of goods in excellent condition and well before the expected date of delivery.

malgudi schooldays

This is a very funny and sweet book written from a schoolboy's perception. From Swami's dream to become a bus conductor to his idea of keeping a spider as a pet, each part is beautifully written. Not only children but grown-ups can enjoy this book till the end.Very beautiful, innocent book.

The Indomitable Swami

Brings back memories! A incredibly good read. Malgudi comes to life in your imagination and by the end of the book, all the characters have endeared themselves to you. A must read and a classic of Indian literature- from the brilliant R. K. Narayan. (View complete review)
