Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking (Paperback) Price: Rs.501

Susan Cain’s Quiet: The Power of Introverts In A World That Can't Stop Talking is a bestselling non-fiction book that celebrates introverts, often undervalued in our society, even though they form a considerable chunk of our population, and contribute invaluably to every sphere as politicians, leaders, artists, writers and so on.

Summary Of The Book

Quiet: The Power of Introverts In A World That Can't Stop Talking is a non fiction book written in 2012 by Susan Cain. The book essentially highlights the fact that western society is largely dominated by extroverts, while introverts remain in the shadows, often underutilised and undervalued, despite the strengths, skills, and talents they possess.

The book goes on to explain the innate differences between introvert and extrovert personality types, their differing brain chemistry, scientific connotations, advantages, and disadvantages of each temperament that they signify. The book’s findings are based on detailed research in areas of neuroscience, psychology, and evolution, all well documented within its content. Providing many examples from history, the book asserts that introversion is a normal human trait, in fact, some of the world’s greatest leaders and creative individuals have been introverts.
In Quiet: The Power of Introverts In A World That Can't Stop Talking, the author studies the history of western society over the years, and notes the shift from an emphasis on character to an emphasis on personality, leading to an ‘extrovert ideal’ in a culture where being an introvert is regarded as an inferior quality.

Breaking this myth, the book stresses on the importance of these individuals in society. It offers helpful insights and tools for introverts to understand themselves, and function better in this extrovert driven society. It also urges them to utilise their untapped potential, skills, and talents, by selecting areas of work best suited for them, offering them advice on better communication and personal relationships with others.

On a larger scale, the book calls for a change in the attitude of society towards introverts, at the workplace, at home through parenting techniques, and in schools. They must not be chastised for being sensitive, serious, and shy, or it would draw them into a shell, leading to a tremendous waste of human potential and happiness.

Quiet: The Power of Introverts In A World That Can't Stop Talking has been praised by critics and writers in the literary world alike. Some have considered it a timely, deeply insightful, and life altering book that permanently changed how one views others, especially introverts. The book ranked second in The New York Times bestseller list, and was voted The Best Non-fiction Book of 2012, by Goodreads Choice Awards.

A Wonderful Gift for Introverts

This book will surely raise the morale of introverts who are struggling to find their place in an overly extroverted world. I, being an almost hundred percent introvert, found it very encouraging. Most of the time introverts struggle against their own personality in order to become more extroverted, or at least act more extroverted. What they do not realize is that they are struggling against their own natural self and trying very hard to become something they are not. Nor do they realize their own unique potential as an introvert. It is a good book for extroverts too as it helps them to... ()

Nor do they realize their own unique potential as an introvert. It is a good book for extroverts too as it helps them to understand the introverts they interact with and see them in a new light. Extroverts, please do not misunderstand, while glorifying introversion, Quiet does not view extroversion as bad either. It is all about balance. One of the many wonderful advices in Quiet is that you could live a successful and fulfilling life by remaining true to your inner self.

Masterpiece on this subject: Kudos to the author

First of all I would like to salute the author for the kind of research she has done to come up with such a masterpiece. Not only she has provided enough research references to make her point but at the same time she has taken care that the message is being delivered to the readers without writing anything wrong about being extroverts/introverts.. She has handled the subject very beautifully and has explained both temperaments the best way..

One thing I want to clarify is that the book is not only for introverts who need better understanding of themselves but it is equally important for extroverts who need to understand the mentality of introverts they have to live/deal with..

Everyone (introverts/extroverts) should read this book to get better understanding of the temperaments, how to deal with the people of opposite type, who can be your (parents/wife/children/friends/colleagues) anyone..

I just can't stop admiring the work author has done, being an introvert herself she has given many insights for introverts to accept themselves as they are and when to behave more extrovert to get hold of the situation..

What a masterpiece, simply outstanding book.. I would recommend this book to everyone I know..

Amazing book!

This is one of the best books that I've read, and hats off to Susan Cain for this amazing work. The book talks talks about introversion in detail and the various behaviors and tendencies of introverts and what they seek. Susan, herself an introvert, is able to easily put the reader at ease, especially an introverted one. Quiet talks about the role an introvert can play in a world that is increasingly tending to overvalue to extroverted ideals, and this is why the book is extremely relevant. Extroverts - Don't think of this as a book for just introverts. At least 1/3rd of the population are introverts, so this would definitely help you understand them better and make you realize that introverts need their space and have different needs.
Introverts - this book is a tribute to us, read it and I'm sure that you'll come out happier and a little wiser

Quiet: A Revelation

The book is a boon to the introverts and extroverts alike, and you can gift it to either or both. For the former to gain confidence, and for the latter to understand the former. The interesting insights backed by solid research are the takeaway lessons one can use in life.
Most important lesson I feel is that persistence, concentration, and self-control can be put to good use by the introverts. Then they can act extrovert if they choose, without loss of identity or individuality provided they take certain precautions.

The kid and teenage phase of life are the crucial ones where the quiet can survive and thrive with the help of the ideas offered by Cain.
The easy writing style leads to a fascinating read.
I wish the title may be revised to represent the extrovert end of the spectrum, because the book is actually for both types, albeit tilted toward the quieter mould.
'Quiet Brilliance' is my suggestion.
As usual the Flipkart buying experience was highly satisfactory.

This is therapy for introverts. Highly recommended.

This is therapy. This is a celebration of introvertism. This is all those things that you feel and know inside your head as an introvert put into an appreciative context.

It's apparent that a lot of research has gone into this, and Susan has dug deep to find relevant studies in the field. There's a healthy sprinkling of anecdotes as well, which I think would resonate with every introvert who's reading this.

The comparison between the Western focus on the individual, and the Eastern focus on family and society is worth reading. Susan does away with the racist overtones of these attitudes,...

The comparison between the Western focus on the individual, and the Eastern focus on family and society is worth reading. Susan does away with the racist overtones of these attitudes, and brings the underlying reasons out in the open. This is an important perspective on things, because it would help everyone understand why many Asian communities are inherently introverted (though still as intelligent and social as their extroverted counterparts).

Of course, it doesn't outcast extroverts altogether. The world needs its introverts and extroverts equally, and they both need each other as well. The book goes on to make that point strongly too.

The chapter on creativity and groupthink is my favorite, possibly because I relate to it the most. Working in groups can kill creativity for people who work better alone, and the culture of open office spaces, meetings and presentations herds them with people who work better in groups against their wishes. This is counter-productive, and in many cases, leads to stress for no good reason.

I am a pseudo-extrovert like the author, and I am happy that she took the time to research and write this book. I wish I would have :-)

Helps to realize the power of being Quiet!

On reading this book I did not find whether it favors Introverts or criticizes the Extroverts. It basically talks about the strength of the quite character which is generally misunderstood or side lined by the dominant extrovert characters in the society. Through various examples, especially the... (View complete review)
