Rajinikanth: The Definitive Biography (English) (Hardcover) Price: Rs.699

The first-ever comprehensive biography of Rajinikanth, Indain cinema's greatest superstar

When I will come, or how, nobody knows, but I will arrive w hen I ought to' - Muthu (1995)

Rajinikanth is, guile simply, the biggest superstar cinema-crazy India has ever seen His stylized dialogues and screen mannerisms are legion, and his guy next door-cum-superhero image has found a hysterically appreciative following among millions of moviegoers.

Naman Ramachandran's marvellous biography recounts Rajinis career in meticulous detail tracing his incredible cinematic journey from his very first film Apoorva RagangaI in 1975 to memorable forays into Bollywood like Andhaa Ka noon and Hum. from landmark films like Billa, Thalapathi and Annamalai to the mega successes of Baasha, Muthu, Padayappa, Chandramukhi, Sivaji and Enthiran Along the way, the book provides rare insights into the Thalaivar's personal life, from his childhood days to his times of struggle when he was still Sivaji Rao Gaekwad and then his eventual stardom: revealing how a legend was born.

Rapnikanth has not written his memoirs, this book is the closest we are likely to get to the definitive Rain story.

About the Author
Naman Ramachandran was placed on Planet Earth with the express purpose of writing the definitive biography of Superstar Rajinikanth. Fate intervened, however, and he was separated at birth from his noble purpose by a metaphorical Kumbh Mela of sorts His life journey took him across the world where he became a film critic with Sight & Sound, a film journalist covering South Asia for Variety and the UK and Ireland for Cineuropa, and the author of the book Light, Camera, Masala: Making Movies in Mumbai, besides a few film scripts A chance encounter with a Penguin revealed the Thalaivar tattoo seared deep into his soul, and the epiphany that followed resulted in this book.

A superb evocation of a life and career

I am an actress now settled in Goa and I was dragged along to a book reading by the author by friends who are die-hard fans of Rajnikant. I knew nothing about the man or his career and was entranced by the author's reading. I bought the book immediately and was transported on an incredible journey. While it was all new territory for me, my fan friends who also bought the book and who had been following Rajinikant's career since the beginning found it full of facts and anecdotes even they didn't know. Beginning to read for the second time now.

Helped me become a fan of the phenomenon

Till I read this book, Rajini was just a trend - one I viewed with some bemusement.

The book helped to contextualize the man, his body of work and the reasons for his mass appeal - not just in South India (or all the countries where South Indians are present) but also in markets such as Japan.

The book is extremely well researched - and does not suffer for the lack of personal reminiscences from the Superstar. It provides an interesting insight into the man as well as the cult phenomenon that he has become.

The book has helped me become a fan - I am now curious to see his entire body...

The book has helped me become a fan - I am now curious to see his entire body of work - especially the earlier movies which have excellent, hard hitting stories. Most of those were directed by K Balanchander - so maybe its time for a book on him as well!

All in all - a great read and well worth the cover price - since its brought me a new lease of life for Tamil Films as a genre and Rajini as a specific segment within that genre.

Looking forward to his next release!

A Racy Read

An incredibly well written book - comprehensive and original analysis that provides a wealth of information at a rapid pace without every getting boring. A page turner which I was unable to put down from the get go. I loved it so much that I ended up buying additional copies to gift my friends. Must have for your bookshelf.

Possibly the best film biography ever

I finally got hold of my own copy and read it in two days flat. It's nothing short of enthralling. Bursting with little known facts about the superstar and packed with exclusive interviews from a who's who including Mani Ratnam, Revati, SP Muthuraman, Kusboo, Vairamuthu, Santoish Shivan etc. Very importantly, it also provides a fascinating history of South indian cinema and culture and shows how it shaped tis man and made him star.

Must read, highly reccommended.

The Rajini Effect

A detailed and thoroughly researched biography about Rajinikanth, that not only takes you on a journey through his career until present day but also uses the Superstar as a device to explore the socio-cultural and political changes in India. My favourite chapters have to be the ones about Thalapathy and Baasha where great insights are provided by the respective directors Mani Ratnam and Suresh Krishna. The book has rekindled the urge in me to go and revisit the Rajinikanth classics so I think i'll be going on my own hunt for his DVDs!

Very well written. No-nonsense, factual narration.
