Relativity: The Special and the General Theory (English) (Paperback) Price: Rs.138

In Relativity - The Special And the General Theory, Albert Einstein puts forth his revolutionary theories on special and general relativity in a lucid manner.

Summary Of Relativity - The Special And the General Theory

Relativity - The Special And the General Theory is the presentation of Albert Einstein’s theories on general and special relativity in his own words. It speaks from a general philosophical as well as scientific perspective. The special theory provides insight into the structure of space time, while the general theory sheds light on gravitation. These theories yielded shocking results, including the dissolution of time.

The book has an introduction by Nigel Calder, a science writer. Calder walks the reader through the book, dissecting its content section by section. He even suggests sections that can be skipped while reading.

The book is not considered an easy, casual read. It contains several abstract ideas that require patience and concentration for full comprehension. Einstein discusses his illuminating theories, citing numerous examples, and using mathematical calculations that are no more complex than the ones in high school algebra.

The book is considered an important part of modern physics. It discusses how the classical mechanics scenario changed dramatically with the discovery of the theory of relativity. It is meant for readers who appreciate Einstein’s work and are interested in delving into the fascinating elements that form our universe.

Through this book, Einstein sought to simplify his theories for those readers who are interested in the theory, but are not familiar with the mathematical aspects of theoretical physics.

The book was first published in 1916. It was translated to English by Robert W. Lawson in 1920. This particular edition of the book was published in 2011.

About Albert Einstein

Albert Einstein was a theoretical physicist from Germany, and he is often regarded as the Father of Modern Physics for his revolutionary theory of relativity.

He published hundreds of articles and books throughout his career, individually as well as in collaboration with other scientists. His works include The Theory Of Relativity, the Annus Mirabilis papers, Ideas And Opinions, Evolution Of Physics, The Meaning Of Relativity, Fifth Edition: Including the Relativistic Theory of the Non-Symmetric Field, and Out Of My Later Years.

Einstein was born on March 14, 1879, in Ulm, part of the German empire. During his growing years, he showed a talent for mathematics. He completed his secondary schooling from Aargau Cantonal School in Aarau, Switzerland. He then took up a 4-year teaching diploma program in physics and mathematics at ETH Zurich. He travelled across the world, delivering lectures in places like Japan, Singapore, and Palestine. He emigrated to the US in 1933, and got American citizenship in 1940. He took up employment with the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton, New Jersey. He received numerous honors and awards, including the Nobel Prize in Physics. He was married twice, first to Mileva Maric, and then to Elsa Lowenthal. He had two sons, Hans and Eduard, from his first marriage, and two adopted stepdaughters, Margot and Ilse, from his second. He died in 1955 due to a case of internal bleeding and subsequent refusal of undergoing surgery.

A Great Book From Einstein

A really great book for me and "those readers who, from a general scientific and philosophical point of view, are interested in the theory, but who are not conversant with the mathematical apparatus". I am mainly attracted by the preface. It is written in simple language.I have read it with rapt attention. But I have gone through some chapters again and again to visualize and understand the fact.Read it . You definitely like it.

This is an excellent piece of food for thought

This is relativity explained by Einstein himself, without using math. There might have been a plain English explanation that is slightly more crisp, however, would you not want to read it from the master himself? The special relativity section is especially clear, and detailed. The section on general relativity is rather brief, and gives you the sense that it is just a flavor, not the full story. Yet it gives you enough to be very interested. The English translation from German could be better, but it really does not make it inexplicable. Those who complain that the translation could not be understood probably would not understand the book even if it is translated better. All in all, I would recommend reading it after some other exposition on the subject.

Must Reads

After reading books by Hawking, Kaku, Greene, and others on the topic, none are more lucid as Einstein himself in describing relativity to the non-physicist. Long on my list of must-reads, I finally got this for myself. After hearing a lifetime of comments and reviews about these theories, it is a good thing to go straight to the source. The roots of relativity are suprisingly simple and may be understood through the thought experiments described within.

A great book if you know what it is meant for.

This is a great book for all those who really want to understand the intricacies of the theory of relativity in depth, understand its origin and appreciate the beauty of it.

The language is simple and mathematical formulas are avoided, but that does not diminish the amount of information or analysis of the subject, nor does it makes this book a peace of cake. You may even have to read some of the parts twice to fully grasp them. But the understanding of relativity that the book provides is worth the effort.

Still wondering why I bought this...!!!

I am an Einstein fan and his pic is on the cover... thats the only reason I gave this book 2 stars, otherwise this piece is poorly scripted... even initial chapters bounced right over my head.
Could not even guess what they are trying to explain.

Awesome book!

Realy great book. If you are looking for basic knowledge about relativity then this book is for you.
But if you are looking for detailed mathematical explanation then go for another book.
This book provides little about factors considered in relativity.
Great for beginners & self learners as...

The Excellent Book from the Great Physicist

Many people finds mathematical part of general and special relativity very difficult. Also the ideas employed in it are purely imaginative. In this book the understanding of the general relativity brought to the level of the non-mathematical & easy view. The texts are very simple and easy to... (View complete review)
