This, the last of three volumes by John Martine, covering the whole of the county of Haddington, was published posthumously. The introduction refers to his inimitable style, giving 'a finer zest' and 'an original flavour reminiscent of the winter fireside of the homely farm-houses of East Lothian.' Avoiding the style and content of the two Statistical Accounts, he weaves history, anecdote and first-hand knowledge to bring to life the inhabitants, notables and organisations which epitomised the featured parishes.
