Book: Rest Is Noise
A sweeping musical history that goes from the salons of pre-warVienna to Velvet Underground shows in the sixties. In ‘The Rest is Noise’, Alex Ross, music critic of the New Yorker, gives us a riveting tour of the wild landscape of twentieth-century classical music: portraits of individuals, cultures, and nations reveal the predicament of the composer in a noisy, chaotic century. Taking as his  starting point a production of Richard Strauss's Salome, conducted by the composer on 16 May 1906 with Puccini, Schoenberg, Berg and Adolf Hitler seated in the stalls, Ross suggests how this evening can beconsidered the century's musical watershed rather than the riotous premiere of Stravinsky's Rite of Spring seven years later. Ross goes on to explore the mythology of modernism, Sibelius and the music of small countries, Kurt Weill, the music of the Third Reich, Britten, Boulez and the post-war avant-garde, and interactions between minimalist composers and rock bands in the sixties and seventies.

Oakland (3-7) 20, Cincinnati (7-3) 17. Sunday showed the Bengals immaturity. After jumping out to a quick 14-0 lead, too many Bengals players took the reset of the game off thinking the Raiders would pack it in; some appeared mot to show up at all Sunday. What makes this effort even worse is that Cinci [...]

The books cashing in on the crash (Independent - November 20, 2009)
One of the few welcome consequences of the global recession has been a modest upsurge in economic literacy, or at least interest. That's not to be exaggerated; most people still don't know their asset-backed securities from the elbows, but at least we're making some attempt to redress that deficit of understanding.

The fourth annual International Society of Improvised Music Festival/Conference takes place in early December this year, and I’ve just made plans to go. By the end of the third day, or maybe the first, I expect that my head will be spinning like Linda Blair’s in “The Exorcist,” except in a good way.

Fiction resurgent in Guardian first book award shortlist (Guardian Unlimited - November 1, 2009)
Powerful fictional storytelling dominates the shortlist of this year's Guardian first book award, announced today, which includes works that range from a portrayal of Alzheimer's to a novel that was the subject of a bidding war between 10 publishers. Three novels, one collection of short stories and a work of reportage are in contention for the £10,000 first prize won last year by a particularly ...

The writing in The Wire Primers is generally excellent, and never less than crystalline, lucid, to-the-point.
