Great Book for Beginners or Professionals
SQL Programming Joes 2 Pros: Programming and Development for Microsoft SQL Server 2008 is more than just another SQL Server manual – it is a textbook that is meant to take beginners and turn them into experts.
The layout of the book is designed to teach, not through memorization but through examples and real world application. Every chapter has “Points to Ponder” sections for every topic. These bullet-point lists are more than just a summary and are worth reading for their teaching examples and reviews.
This book is full of illustrations taken directly from SQL Server screen shots. The illustrations have arrows highlighting the important details, and some pictures even show what will happen if something goes wrong – a huge help to any student!
The goal of the authors is to help developers become Microsoft Certified Technical Specialists. The book is easy to read but has all the information you would get from a manual or textbook. It even has examples, quizzes, and a glossary so you know you are learning as much as possible. If you are a more advanced developer, the book is still a great way to learn about new features or fill any gaps in your knowledge.
One of the best chapters is #13: Performance Tips, written by Pinal Dave – Technology Evangelist and Microsoft MVP. This chapter specifically focuses on how to optimize and streamline SQL Server performance. In this chapter Pinal Dave explains why these are the “little things that count.”
In summary, this book is a must-have for anyone who works with SQL Server. Not only is it entertaining – each chapter begins with a short story as an example or metaphor for the topic to be covered – but included with your purchase is free access to online companion files. You will have fun reading and learning at the same time. Five stars!
