Such A Long Journey is a contemporary novel by Rohinton Mistry.

    Summary of the Book

During the political unrest in India which led to the formation of Bangladesh, Gustad Noble is a Parsi man living in Bombay with his family. A middle-class man, Gustad works as a clerk in a bank. He is troubled by financial instability and he struggles to provide his family what they need to survive. Despite having secured an admission into an IIT, his eldest son refuses to join the college, unable to see that it will change their family’s fortunes. When his youngest daughter falls sick, Gustad begins to doubt whether he can even stay sane any longer. However, a letter from an old friend arrives just in time to change everything. He then begins a journey during which he will learn much, and one of the things he learns might just be the answer to his troubles.

    An interesting book

I found this book interesting. The novel deals with the life of a Parsi man in the early 1970's and describes his fear and insecurity as a member of the minority community. The political scene is very vivid , real and appears genuine . The price is just rs 230 on flipkart. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants to read it. Much better than the likes of "the white Tiger"

a journey of sorrow and pain...

Beautifully written by Mistry. Layer wise composition of pain for Gustad (main character) from every sphere. A deep insight into a parsi family. the struggle of a clerk with his surrounding is worth reading. As always, Rohinton has mentioned the crookedness of then prime minister and her son. This book led me to read other two classics from Mistry. truly, its a must read journey (story) of sorrow.

    A good journey

Let me begin by saying I am a great fan of this author so may be baised. I love the way he concocts a story, each character having its own importance. What i like most in his stories is the sadness in it. The story was good but not as great as a fine balance. Nevertheless i enjoyed every page of it. All his stories touches you on some level and so did this one.

    Mistry's a genius..

This one's supposedly his first book. But I somehow managed to read it at the very end of the four books that he's written. Sincerely, he has produced a masterpiece. His penmanship is subtle, yet flawless. He manages to create such an intricate web of characters in his books that you just won't be able to pit the book down unless u've read through the very nd of it. This one's not an exception either to his exquisite craftsmanship. Lets you travel around the Mumbai of 70's while sitting in you...
