Rutland's Guns

1900 - Peter Rutland, now a Major in the Royal Artillery, is posted to Cape Province in the early part of 1900 to trial a new type of gun under battlefield conditions against the Boers. He finds this campaign completely different from any other action he has been in before, and he is unsure about the validity of the reasons for fighting these farmers. His family relationships turn this campaign into a personal civil war for him. He is still deeply saddened by the death of his wife Beatrice but finds a new love from an unexpected situation. During the intense fighting, the type of which foreshadows that of the First World War, he discovers treachery, and a depth of loyalty that he should have been aware of. Rutland's Guns gives an insight into the lives of Gunners during the Boer War in South Africa, and vividly paints the picture of action in a beautiful but unforgiving country.
