
This book is a comparative study ofthe structure of ragas inthe North and South India, and the modes of classifying them. The Thats (parentscales) of Hindustani music and seventy-two Carnatic Melakartas have beencarefully dealt with. The author studies the pitch value of each note and ascribes about four thousand plus raga scales, under the fitting mela structure. The book brings out certainlaws of taxonomy common between those related to ragas with reference to theThats/Metakartas and those currently in vogue in contemporary cognitiveresearch.
