Second World War (English) (Hardcover) Price: Rs.688

A magisterial, single-volume history of the greatest conflict the world has ever known by our foremost military historian

The Second World War began in August 1939 on the edge of Manchuria and ended there exactly six years later with the Soviet invasion of northern China. The war in Europe appeared completely divorced from the war in the Pacific and China, and yet events on opposite sides of the world had profound effects. Using the most up-to-date scholarship and research, and writing with clarity and compassion, Beevor assembles the whole picture in a gripping narrative that extends from the North Atlantic to the South Pacific, from the snowbound steppe to the North African Desert, to the Burmese jungle, SS Einsatzgruppen in the borderlands, Gulag prisoners drafted into punishment battalions, and to the unspeakable cruelties of the Sino-Japanese War.

Moral choice forms the basis of all human drama, and no other period in history has presented greater dilemmas both for leaders and ordinary people, nor offered such examples of individual and mass tragedy, the corruption of power politics, ideological hypocrisy, the egomania of commanders, betrayal, perversity, self-sacrifice, unbelievable sadism and unpredictable kindness. Although filling the broadest canvas on a heroic scale, Beevor's THE SECOND WORLD WAR never loses sight of the fate of the ordinary soldiers and civilians whose lives were crushed by the titanic forces unleashed in this, the most terrible war in history.

About the Author
Antony Beevor served as a regular officer in the 11th Hussars in Germany. He is the author of Crete - The Battle and the Resistance, which won a Runciman Prize, Paris After the Liberation, 1944-1949 (written with his wife Artemis Cooper), Stalingrad, which won the Samuel Johnson Prize, the Wolfson Prize for History and the Hawthornden Prize for Literature, Berlin - The Downfall, which received the first Longman-History Today Trustees' Award, and The Mystery of Olga Chekhova. Stalingrad and Berlin have been translated into twenty-five languages and sold more than two and a quarter million copies between them. His latest work, A Writer at War - Vasily Grossman with the Red Army 1941-1945, is an edition, with his Russian researcher, Dr Luba Vinogradova, of Grossman's wartime notebooks. A fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et Lettres in France, Antony Beevor has also been the chairman of the Society of Authors and is a visiting professor at the School of History, Classics and Archaeology at Birkbeck College, University of London. He lives in London and Kent and has a daughter and a son.

An absorbing accessible updated history

From students of history to video game freaks there is something about WW2 which fascinates. Beevor an established master of the Eastern front gives us the whole thing -Western and Eastern European, African and Pacific theaters -weaving the multiple threads into a big picture while keeping the reader oriented in time and space. Its easy to read. Does not skip any staples like Dunkirk, Leningrad, Stalingrad, Kursk, Battle of Britain, Normandy, Crete, El Alamien, Iwo Jima, Okinawa, Burma and of course Berlin and Hiroshima. Filled with first person accounts of soldiers and civilians from both sides the book gives you a frontline view of the ugliness and tragedy of war. Beevor does not gloss over Arthur Harris`indiscriminate bombing of German cities, the killing fields of Byelorussia and Ukraine, the Red army rapes in east Prussia, the Allied mustard gas fiasco in Bari, the rape of Nanking, the indecisive Montgomery, the professionalism of German soldiers or opportunism and brutality of (our friend) Tito. Its only in the 70s that the Allies have let out their best kept secret- that they had broken the German Enigma code right at the start of the war. The enormous advantage this gave them needs to be factored in for any analysis of the war. Moreover critical facts concerning the conduct of the war by the Soviet union are only now tumbling out into the light. An updated history is very much in order. Our sensibilities have also changed over the years. Stalin sent 3 million Red army soldiers to the GULAG after the war simply for letting themselves be captured alive or merely remarking that Germans or Hungarians had a better standard of living. Americans tried to send all their de-mobilised soldiers to college. It is no wonder that a nation could bury their communism overnight. The birth of the final solution and the working of the death camps get a chapter each. We are given a tour of the bizarre mind of Hoss the Auschwitz commandant. Familiarity has possibly numbed our minds to the holocaust; but Beevor`s slightly detached reportage touches a nerve. The most moving passages are the description of the starvation of Leningrad where even parents driven to cannibalise their dead children. The systematic, cold blooded cannibalism practised by the Japanese army throughout SE Asia is something that transcends all limits of depravity. British Indian PoWs who refused to join the INA were used as `human cattle` in Burma. This matter was suppressed and not raised in the 1946 war crimes trial in oder not to hurt the sentiments of the families. As an Indian I wonder whether Subhash Bose knew what company he was keeping. Beevor also gives us a an insider view of the three Big Three meetings in Tehran, Yalta and Potsdam which shaped the war, the immediate post war Europe and perhaps the whole world after that. Roosevelt is seen fully occupied in thwarting all attempts by Churchill to maintain a pre-war imperial status quo while not seeing what Stalin is up to while Churchill reads Stalin inside out but cant do a thing about it and Stalin sits back and plays the other two against each other. The end of the old empire, the beginning of the new communist empire and the emergence of America are all discernable at the end of the book. Altogether an overwhelming read. Highly recommended.

the second world war

one of the best books ever to have been written about the greatest man made catastrophe. it gives the entire picture of this and though it contains more than 780 pages, it is not boring to read. the six volume work by sir winston churchill is considered to be the greatest by critics but not for laypersons
like me.it took me about 2 months to read this. i thank flipkart for the prompt delivery.

A genuine masterpiece..

Wow.. what a mammoth undertaking.. the first aspect which strikes you about this book is the sheer size of it. it's an unenviable task to extensively research and restrict an important event like the second world war to 800 pages. the book is rich in details about the start of war, the turning of tide, the egoistic clash among the generals and leaders, the debacles and bad decisions from either side, the inhuman atrocities suffered by civilians across the world.. before this book, i was never aware of the defeat of Russia to Finland at the beginning of the war or the Battles which were foug...
