Great Crime fictionGregory David Roberts aka Shantaram is one of the Greatest writers I've come across.Shantaram is a semi autobiographical of the life of GDR.He writes with perfection. He's a born writer and I must say Shantaram is one of the 100 books an Indian must read in a lifetime. It has elements of a travelogue, historical novel,a crime fiction book. Its long and took me time to read. But you'll be hooked on to it once you start..The book is also very controversial account of his life and exposes corruption in police system and the criminal-police-politician nexus in a very interesting manner and the essence … (Expand)

933 pg, 42 chapters long masterpiece! The experience of reading Shantaram is like that of drinking a fine scotch. With every chapter, you get a new high. The last few chapters create an incredible levels of curiosity and shock simultaneuosly. And then, the last chapter, in a clever way, lays the basis for the sequel to Shantaram. It leaves you wanting for more. It is rumoured that Gregory Roberts has been working on the sequel for the past 4 years. I have to say that I find it difficult to wait for the sequel. You just fall in love with this character and wish him a happy ending. But that doesn't happen. It isn't a bad ending eit… (Expand)

A-shantaramNothing ram like or peaceful about the book. It is the biographical journey of the author Gregory David Roberts, from an australian prision where was serving time for armed robbery to becoming a social activist. Through the journey he settles in Bombay in 1980's befriends Prabhakar, learns Marathi, Hindi, Prabhakar's mother renames 'Linbaba' as "Shantaram" the book records the huge dark underbelly of Bomaby that deals with false passports, currency, drugs, women. The slum dwellers, their life, the Bollywood and its Gora extras. over all an interesting read if you have the time and energy.

Drugs/Mafia/Philosophy/Adventure/Poverty=ShantaramWell let me put it straight: it's just another novel till the chapter 29 (i.e, almost half of the novel). But later that it begins to make sense and is heart touching. Few points to new buyers:

One of classics for collectionThis book is very bulky and I was wondering what the author has written so much to fill it. After I started to read through pages, I admit, I couldn't stop. Some of the wisdom and philosophy have never been read anywhere by me before. The flow of the story is very well and its very interesting to read through Lin's journey through it.
