Ten points on the Sheaffer 300:
1. Yes, it's a heavy pen. But take the cap off, and it's surprisingly well balanced.
2. It's made in Slovakia.
3. It claims to have a Medium nib, but it puts down a rather fine line. And it takes a bit of pushing to get the flow going. So remember to wash the nib once before inking it for the first time. I suspect that the tines are pretty tight. And I don't think they will get loose without help. (But don't try doing that.)
4. The grip is smooth plastic that might feel cheap to some.
5. When the ink flow is steady, as it oftentimes is, even with the fine tip the pen writes smoothly, and there's only a mild skipping (which can be annoying).
6. The construction is very good. The cap fits tightly, and there aren't any random moving parts.
7. The gold plating isn't as remarkable as in some higher models.
8. The cartridges hold only an average amount of ink. Quink and Pelikan cartridges hold about twice as much.
9. This pen *will* draw attention. Maybe even a comment or two.
10. Slovakia. Wow!
A while back I decided to write more on paper instead of using the computer and mobile for trivial work like preparing lists etc. Once I was in the habit of putting pen to paper I realised I needed a better writing instrument. I have always been biased towards fountain pens and there is no better brand than Sheaffer (I cannot afford a Mont Blanc yet!!!!).
Coming to the product in particular, I have to say that it does not write but glides on paper. Writing is an incredible pleasure. The pen feels a tad heavy if the cap is attached to the back while writing but I don't ever do that. The body feels sturdy ( I have already dropped the pen once with no apparent damage). The 2 cartridges and traditional plunger provided with the pen are very thoughtful on the part of Sheaffer.
I am a happy writer.
This is an absolute beauty of a pen. Its heavy and sturdy a bit too. But not to worry when the cap is removed it is very less in the heaviness. What more else this is a procesless possession to have, as these days Fountain Pens are of an extinct. It does come with 2 ink cartridges with a 1 year warrent and a manual in it. Well gift wrapped and nice black box which serves as a case for the pen. At the end of the day worth a money. If you think u are spending Rs.2200 for this, i would say dont think about it. Eyes closed go for it, atleast posses it. It was in the year 1994-1995 i last touched Sheaffer after that i am touching it now(2012). Great sense of satisfaction.
I have been using this for the past four months. The instrument is a perfect one for fountain pen lovers.Initially i was using the cartridge(blue) which I received along with pen,and now I shifted to Pelikan Edelstein Ink (Topaz color) and i will say the experience is awesome with this combo.I want to tell you people with my experience its an awesome pen ya its bit heavy and sadly the ink which provided by sheaffer is of low quality,if u really want to feel the art of writing use this incredible pen along with Pelikan Edelstein Ink.
If you really wanna feel what a fountain pen is, kindly go for it!Perfect ink flow with a stylish yet hardy barrel. The weight of the pen is no nicely balanced that fingers wont get easily fatigued even for after prolonged and fast writing!!!
I would recommend Medium nib, since it gives the best flow. Out of all the different Prelude models, this Black-Nickel stands out!
However, you should wash it at least once a month and take care of the scratches specially for the glossy models..
