A Shot at History: My Obsessive Journey to Olympic Gold (Hardcover) Price: Rs.219

The book is an autobiography of the Olympic Gold Medalist Shooter, Abhinav Bindra.

Summary Of The Book

A Shot at History: My Obsessive Journey to Olympic Gold  traces Abhinav Bindra’s relentless pursuit of perfection, towards his dream of achieving the coveted trophy, an Olympic Gold Medal.

Bindra’s story is the story of a champion athlete, with all the triumphs and agonies that such a career entails.

Abhinav Bindra was born in an affluent family that could afford the best training, coaches, and facilities. But he clearly points out that having the best of everything does not ensure success. In his book, he clearly outlines that only a hunger for excellence and an inner desire to be the best can help a person succeed in life.

His journey started young, when he would practice shooting at paper targets as a child. Later, he was trained by international coaches. Abhinav Bindra talks in length about these people, his trainers and coaches, who enormously contributed to his rise as a professional shooter.

His long time German Coach, Gaby Buehlmann, helped him stay grounded after his bitter disappointment at finishing seventh during the Athens Olympics in 2004. In fact, he even considered giving up the sport altogether, but Buehlmann helped him get back on his feet and stay focused.
Bindra also recalls how a letter from Uwe Reisterer, his consultant coach, helped regain his focus. The letter told him that he could be the World Champion in 2006, and go on to be an Olympic Champion two years later.

In this book, Bindra also acknowledges his inspirations and other champion shooters that he looked up to, including Gagan Narang, Samaresh Jung, Jaspal Rana and Anjali Bhagwat.

A Shot at History: My Obsessive Journey to Olympic Gold begins at a low point in his life - his failure to win a medal at the Olympics in Athens, in 2004. From this darkest hour in his career, the book traces his journey, before and after that event, to his eventual triumph at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

The book also highlights the unique situation faced by an Olympic contestant. As Bindra explains, a cricketer can play several test matches in a year, and a tennis or golf player has several Grand Slam events in a year. If they fail in one, they will have a chance of redemption at another event within that year. But for an Olympic athlete, fame and glory comes only once every four years. The book is aptly tailored to inspire the ambitious to further glory.

Quest for perfection

This book is probably the best sports biography ever written.
Most of us think that rifle-shooting is a simple, straightforward sport: just aim your rifle at the target, stand as still as possible, hold your breath and pull the trigger. In fact, it’s so simple it shouldn’t even be called a sport, right?
aren’t we wrong! This book provides the reader a great insight into this sport and into the mind of a champion from the best perspective possible: that of the shooter himself.
It gives an outstanding insight into the sport that is hardly known. And it could be a book on sports psychology by itself.

Reading this book has led me to really respect and admire this truly incredible sportsman. And I’m sure you will too. At the end of the book, you will be blown away by Abhinav's single-minded pursuit of excellence. Rohit Brijnath's outstanding writing skills and Abhinav's inner voice make this a fascinating read.

One more Sports biographies which inspires me a lot & draws a lot of similarity from bindra's :

A Yogi with Gun

" A shot at History" Really its a shot of old believes that winning a gold medal at world's largest sports carnival is not possible by an Indian. Heartfelt thanks to the writer and Abhinav Bindra to bring such a phenomenon book on his journey that will bring lot of confidence and inspiration to new generation.

As an Indian, I salute Abhinav for the laurels he brought to the country where 'The gold medal was remote. Never seen by most, never touched. And as described it the book 'this very foreignness of it made the journey more mysterious and arduous. The lucid flow of language is so prominent throughout the book which will mesmerized you in such a way that Abhinav presence will be felt around as if he is seating in front of you and narrating a story that is close to his heart, a story One billion people want to hear.

This book is a fresh relief of air in a cricket crazy nation where you can find the words like 10's, Range, Pellets never uttered or listened. In this book, we can see the beauty of this sport, its own uniqueness & why Abhinav Bindra should be considered as the greatest sporting personalities India has ever produced.

Market is flooded with foreign authors and we Indian take much interest in tales of heroism from seven oceans away and give a very cold shoulder to our Indian writer & our own achiever. The tales of heroism from our own country is going to inspire the whole nation for long and certainly Rohit Brijnath can compete for lucidness of his language if we can organize Olympic of English language writing.

Glimpse of the craftsmanship of words, which illustrates our richness of the language, unedited excerpts from this book:

 Constantly tell an American he is the best, and he will saunter into the arena and say 'Lets kick ass and beat the hell out of everyone. 'Tell an Indian he's the best and he tends to be defensive: 'I am the best, I better not make a mistake.
 The cricketer has Test matches throughout the year; the tennis player has four grand slam events in twelve months, the golfer the same number of majors annually. Constantly there is an opportunity for redemption, a chance to stake a claim for greatness. Not for me. My only chance comes every four years. My only chance is seventy shots in 125 minutes every four years.
 Shooters can't suddenly shout 'fucckkk' as footballers strikers do after a miss opportunity to score, we can't throw guns as one might a tennis racket, we have to absorb everything, swallow conflict, keep it tightly leashed within, not let it out, give up our humanness to became a machine.
 My trigger is sensitive; it takes just 30 grams of pressure to set it off. Almost to the point where, if a platoon of arguing bees sat on it, it will fire. But I have enough control in my finger to pull it back 20 grams and than hold it, hold it, hold it, and then exert a little more to fire, as gently as a butterfly's breathe. It's cool.

58 lives like images in two cluster of the book has been successful in giving reader a peek in his personal and international space of this genius. This book is emotional from Indian point of view & inspirational for the world since it's a story of an Olympic champion. This book speaks about the physical fitness. In his own words,” Yogi with a gun. My respiratory rate prior to the Olympics was fourteen to fifteen cycles per minute, but I learn, slow down, slow down, and by the time I get to Beijing it is down to four to five cycles per minute.

Some words of wisdom in this stressful world "Pressure is like air. Too much and you have a hurricane. Too little and you suffocate. But in the correct amount it is the breath of life”.

Reading this book will leave you only with one message i.e
"Whatever your mind can conceive, your heart can believe, you can achieve.

A Must Read

As as Indian sports fan, we wanted an individual medal at the Olympics - the Mecca for Sports. Over the years at the games, wrestler Khashaba Dadasaheb Jadhav at 1952 Helsinki tennis legend Leander Paes at 1996 Atlanta, weight lifter Karnam Malleshwari at 2000 Sydney broke the bronze barricade. Then came Colonel Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore at the 2004 Athens Games where he won the Silver Medal. But there was always something irritating an Indian, something that would be heard as taunts from other countries. 1 Billion people and not a single Gold Medal. And then comes in Abhinav Bindra who has fought so valiantly against this mental block and against our system to get that for India.

For every person who wishes to achieve their Goals in life, you need to read this book to understand how Abhinav Bindra redefines hard work, sincerity, patience and that desire to win.

A must read.

A Shot at History

An excellent book for youngsters who aim high in life. Lot of leaves can be taken out of the book as regards to FOCUS,ATTENTION TO DETAIL,THINKING OUT OF BOX,PATIENCE,PERSEVERENCE, FIGHTING SPIRIT AGAINST ALL ODDS,REHEARSAL,NEVER SAY DIE ATTITUDE

I have presented the book to my daughter for getting inspiration

Hats off to Abhinav Bibdra for the epoch making victory at Beijing 2008.It only shows how much genuine preparation is required to get individual GOLD at Olympics that too in an event like Shooting. No doubt his is a stupendous feat in 112 years of olympics history.Still sorry state of affairs continues in sports administration as depicted in the book...May be in the years to come things will become alright.
