This is one lens which any startup DSLR photographer should have. It gives an awesome range with the 70-300mm and is decently neat at the tele end too. Lack of Image stabilization can be seen when at 300mm, but like someone said... "photographers used to take photos even before IS was invented"
Autofocus is strictly OK and you may want to put it on manual mode most of the time. Kind of like Old School. But I can live with that. Tripod would be a great partner when you intend to do low light or zoomed up photography.
