The Singularity is Near : When Humans Transcend Biology (Paperback) Price: Rs.854

For over three decades, Ray Kurzweil has been one of the most respected and provocative advocates of the role of technology in our future. In his classic The Age of Spiritual Machines, he argued that computers would soon rival the full range of human intelligence at its best. Now he examines the next step in this inexorable evolutionary process: the union of human and machine, in which the knowledge and skills embedded in our brains, will be combined with the vastly greater capacity, speed, and knowledge-sharing ability of our creations.

Dog Faeces Served with Fine, Gourmet Touch for Chumps

The questions and visions of humanity's future is one that elicits a feel of romantic intrigue among many intellectuals. After reading this book, one tends to think that even halfwits and retards, like Kurzweil, get to present their "vision" as 600+ pages of utter nonsense. It's regrettable that there is almost no positive aspect to this book, and as such I hope to highlight only a small fraction of flaws so as to warn potential readers about it.

The book starts-off with a tone of techno-optimism which was resonant of ca. '60s West. The author (RK) thoughtlessly assumes that all the technological developments which have occurred to this point will not only continue *indefinitely*, but also accelerate rapidly. According to RK, everything will be well. Soon hunger, war, disease, poverty, and *even death* will become a thing of the past; how? once we learn to fuse our consciousness with computers and infuse our blood with nanobots. Once the RK's 'trans-metamorphosis' is complete humans have shed their mortality and never have to look back to their human bodies, which RK idiotically calls "Ver 1.0". In other instances, the so-called "Moore's Law", which was a short-lived erroneous hype, RK goes over the top to use it to explain rapid technological progress. That's not all. Do you want to look like Brad Pitt? Or Aishwarya Rai? Just order the nanobots in your blood by thinking about looks and they will redesign your body.

RK's halfwit knowledge of neurobiology and cybernetics is quite glaring; he assumes some of his cherry-picked theories, not validated by experiments, to not only be true, but also have perfectly atomistic qualities, with a presupposition of reversibility. The crux of his arguments to justify his visions go like this: theory A predicts that Event 1 will occur, which means theory B is proved valid, and since theory B predicts Event 2 can occur, Event 2 *will* occur a couple of decades from now. By his line of reasoning the conclusion is unmistakable: infinite knowledge and immortality is right around the corner.

RK rejects *ALL* and *EVERY* limitations imposed by laws of nature. Laws of Physics are for sissies, according to RK. Ecology and environment is for doomers; mathematics for the unimaginative... Nanobots rule all! Goedel? Who's he, RK asks.

Too often he drops lines from intellectual greats like Wittgenstein, Einstein, Turing etc. to create a subliminal rub-off effect on the (gullible) reader into believing that what RK is saying is on the same lines, and somehow no explanation is needed for the conclusions he has reached. RK drops more names and quotations than an overfed horse having a case of indigestion on the road.

RK claims that he takes 250 supplements a day, yes *250*, for health upkeep. If his visions are any indication, most of it may be variants of LSD. The author seems to be disturbingly idiotic for someone whose work was edited before publishing.
AVOID READING THIS BOOK AND IT WILL BE ONE OF THE BEST DECISIONS YOU'LL MAKE.
