When a woman refuses to sit next to him on the bus, Rick Braithewaite is saddened and angered by her prejudice. In post-war cosmopolitan London he had hoped for a more enlightened attitude. When he begins his first teaching job in a tough East End school the reactions are the same. Slowly and painfully some of the barriers are broken down. He shames his pupils, wrestles with them, enlightens them and eventually comes to love them. To Sir With Love is the story of a dedicated teacher who turns hate into love, teenage rebelliousness into self-respect, contempt into consideration for others - the story of a man's own integrity winning through against all the odds.

Unlike some of the bestsellers , this book deals with stark realities- how a black overcomes the biggest predicament in his life , ultimately to discover that he has in himself a teacher people would love to be taught by and a human being endowed with qualities which are rare , yet priceless ! The black manages to civilize one of the most unruly sections of a school in UK that was known for its shameless products!
Read this book if you want to know what a "teacher" should be like , especially when there is a real dearth of people who can clearly define this word , nowadays !
What I loved about the book was that the central protaganist was not infallible. Even "Sir" (with his extraordinary human qualities) was subjected to feelings of self-doubt, frustration and anger. But of course, they bounce back and correct themselves faster than most. What a book! Even after many decades it does not fail to charm us.
Best book written by a coloured teacher in London.Unable to get any better job just because of his pigmentation.Made into a boxoffice movie with Sidney poitier as cast.Currently E.R.Braithwaite is working at Washington and wrote me just last month. He is fine.I do hope Shilpa Shetty or Bips can contact me and they may feel better after writing to this person or reading his book.

True to the title, the book has reminded me of the teachers who have changed my life around and given me something to look forward to. This book is a must read for all those who have hated and loved their teachers in school, college and life itself. The author does justice to potray not just a teacher's perspective but also the point of view of a student, a collegue, a parent, and a community member towards learning.
I read this book when I was in Grade Nine.I read it now as a practising teacher. It makes a difference.I think every teacher must read this.It gives you an insight and goads you to be unbiased and kind to children under your care.I wish Vintage classic collection had taken more care about the quality of print and paperback binding though.
